No VOIP with Skype??

Hi everyone

I just bought a HTC Hero yesterday and downloaded the skype application only to find out that android phones do not support VOIP and therefore no free skype-to-skype calls! Will this ever change, or is there a workaround already??

I am very fustrated with this :S

Skype is a JOKE!
Try sipdroid.org as they are free/cheap and can connect to Skype users. I use sipdroid direct to Gizmo5 to call the USA from Vietnam for 2 cents a Min.

Yeah I have tried it but I find it very confusing :S Will people also be able to call me on my skype id? And what about skype conversations with more than one person??

At the moment we have only Lite version of Skype on Android, but there are plans to make a Full Skype client on Android. Can't wait for this!

Yes, it is confusing. Yes, people will be able to call your Skype ID. I don't know about the Skype conversations with multiple people. Maybe a text based IM can text Skype.

This
may help you. It helped me. I went with Gizmo5. You only need to buy call out minutes, which are like $.02 per minute. And you'll need a Google Voice account.

I figured it out in an evening, and it works reliably on wi-fi and data.

Full Skype client for android is in the works? Can I have a news source for this? lol

I really hope they make a full skype client.

Hi guys

Fring have an alpha version that some people are testing. Like me :p

It does skype calls and IM, a bit rusty (it is alpha after all) but it does work. Skype out not so great yet, but give it a couple of weeks and I think they'll get it down pat. I really like the feature that allows you to call out any number in your phone book through skype, good for me to call overseas!

Skype on 3 is also available, but they (3) say that it is only available to use on the hero on the three network, and only via 3g. I just downloaded it to my T-Mobile pulse, and it's not signing in over wi-fi or 3g.

Anybody had any success with Skype on 3 who isn't a 3 customer?

Skype on 3 is only free Skype to Skype. Not Skype Out. Rumor has it Google is negotiating to buy Gizmo for 4 mil. I hope they polish Gizmo because even on my wi-fi, the call quality blows.

This is my biggest irritation with Android.

I should have stayed with my iPhone until they ironed out that minor detail.

It is. I've used it. I made a call and I received a call from my Skype call-in number. The quality was clear as a bell. There was however a lag.

Everything was done through Fring, a free client which seems capable of connecting to every IM network out there, and can be found in Marketplace.

Consequently, I was also able to enter my Gizmo SIP settings. I have a call-in number with Gizmo. I was able to both make and receive calls... right on my HTC Hero!!!

This is huge people. Because the set up is as easy as entering your username and password.

I've tested SIPdroid and Talkonaut thoroughly and I highly recommend Fring as the best yet.

I have to say though I just installed it and tested it out. Time will tell the true value of this, but based on what I've seen, Fring has already done in 10 minutes what neither of those other programs could do over days of configuring and testing.

If only something could be done about the lag. It's approximately 1.5-2 seconds, and the caller on the other end knows because it's their voice that's echoing.

Progress.

Can some one please verify this..

Hi

Fring is available and does do Skype.

As Dakev said, it just works and takes about 10 minutes.

It's got some problems apart from the lag, but as a basic skype client it's great. Give it a couple of weeks/months to get the bugs ironed out and improve the call quality and it'll be great.

Sadly not quite usable for work (yet), but for casual use, go for it.

Yes, can someone please back me up. I'm on a European HTC hero with the MoDaCo ROM. Fring is in the marketplace.

Fring only needed the Skype username and password.
Gizmo needed the username, proxyserver, and password.

It connects with GTalk, MSN, Yahoo, etc.

There is no place to download Skype for Android because it does not exist and it was said at least 10 times in this thread so I do not know what you expect here.
