Help No Volume Control? LG Optimus L7

Hi, I got a new LG Optimus L7 phone about two and a half months ago and for the most part I love it but about two days ago I encountered a problem, I can no longer control the volume. The screen displays that the volume is adjusting but it remains on the highest volume level. Also when I go to plug in my headphones the sound will only play out loud and not through the ear buds. I'm not very good with technology so if you have a solution please keep it simple because I have no idea what half of this technology shit is... thanks in advance to anyone who can help! ^^

Have you tried a factory reset of your phone? You would lose all your apps and data so you would need to back everything up first.
