Non-Market Apps

In November I installed Android 5.0 (lollipop) on my Nexus 7. It was an upgrade from 4.4.4 KitKat. After the upgrade I noticed that a couple of non-market apps that were on the device were deleted during the upgrade. I was unable to reinstall these apps since the "button" which allows the installation of non-market apps is nowhere to be found.

Can anybody shed some light here?

LOL, they kind of hid the settings from the swipe down. Took me a time or two to find it. Swipe down on the notification bar, tap the area of the grey bar where the wifi / battery level / G+ avatar area and it will expand to show the toggles. Next to the G+ avatar is a gear icon, tap that to go into settings. In there the second section is Security and then you should see the unknown sources option. Note, they also changed it from a checkbox the an on/off slider.

I just launch the Settings app from the app drawer, then scroll down to the Personal section that has a Security row, select that Security row and then scroll down like Unforgiven said to the Unknown sources toggle (you'll be prompted with "Your phone and personal data are more vulnerable to attack..." prompt).

Just different ways of saying and getting to that option :).

Thanks to Unforgiven and scary alien. I found the non-market setting. Actually it was already set to allow out of market apps to install on my device. These apps will not install.

So now my problem is that I cannot install these out of market apps even though I have granted permission for them to be accepted by my device. There is obviously something else at play here. Has anybody had a similar problem?

What apps are they? Is it possible they aren't compatible with Lollipop? I found one that won't play at all, but it would install.

The apps are both for New Jersey poker sites. '888 Poker' and 'WSOP Poker'. They both worked in 4.4.4 (KitKat). I've been in touch with 888 who is the author of both apps. They are stumped as of now.

Thanks for the heads up. I just installed the WSOP app on my Nexus 7. It is a play money app, not the New Jersey app. My understanding is that the Play Store does not allow "gambling" apps, even legal ones.

Surprisingly, two other poker apps, 'partypoker nj' and 'Borgata poker nj' were both reinstalled on my device after I upgraded the OS to 5.0.

Yes. The federal government does not permit online gambling. However, each state can allow it. Currently there are three states that have online casinos and online poker rooms. The states are Nevada, New Jersey, and Delaware. Delaware has very little, if any online gambling. Nevada has some, but with a very small population it's not considered a player in this field. New Jersey has a population of almost 9 million, which makes it the most viable state in the online gambling field. New York will probably become the fourth state sometime this year. Nevada and Delaware have a "sharing" agreement, but with almost no players, it is meaningless. New York and New Jersey have said that they will also have a "sharing" agreement. This will be more meaningful. Actually you do not have to live within the borders of a "gambling" state. You can live most anywhere, but you can only play within the state's borders.
