Non Root usb tether and data usage

For those of us who are not rooted wanted to possibly discuss how we are dealing with data and internet....
---------------------------
I had been "borrowing" internet via wifi for home pc. This unfortunately ended when source moved. Now with no open wifi available nearby and not being able to afford cable internet at moment must rely on usb phone tether.
I tried PDANet+ and wifi tether lite and have found PDA to be a good fit since it allows https sites which tether lite wont.

As per a recent post on

http://www.makeuseof.com/tag/save-money-mobile-internet-data-bill-apps-tricks

Wondering if anyone has tried
Opera Max and/or UC Browser HD

Claims they help compress data and save data usage

I am just starting to try both so its to early to tell if they work.

So if there are any others non rooted out there in similar situation wondering what apps or work around ur using.

BTW should mention that can run PDANet usb tether or via bluetooth ...usb seems faster though

I used opera back in the virgin mobile days because it does use a proxy server to re compress images and that helped with VMs slow data. These days on my volt and over boost it is a non issue.

I havnt used opera desktop, make sure its using operas proxy server. By default it probably is not.

Also keep in mind it won't shrink streaming audio or video, nore downloads.

According to makeusof article Opramax compresses video.

Not sure if it actually does..Right now its saying after almost a days use I used 21.9 mb and saved 2mb

As for the few videos I watch ...usually TV shows Ive missed from the day before....
Probably go to nearby library to use the wifi there then transfer over to pc to watch

Update....Phone says have used 845 mb.....
Opera Max says...789mb used...138 mb saved so far as of start of cycle 20th of month.

Not sure if this is completely accurate
