Non-Smartphone plan on non U.S. android?

I currently have a LG-VU+ with unlimited non-smartphone data. I've used Android before (AT&T found out quickly so I had to stop) but do not want to have to pay $30 for data. Is there a non U.S. android phone with compatible bands for AT&T that I can buy and be able to put my sim card in it and go without worrying? My phone is nice but there really aren't any apps and what ones there are, are so slow it's faster for me to use the phone's browser.

Hello. Are you on contract or prepay? I think you just need to negotiate a smaller data plan with your carrier. It's a lot easier if you're on prepay as you can get weekly, monthly or longer plans. Just tell them you don't want streaming, online gaming or other heavy usage (I presume that is what is meant by "non-smartphone data?").

You can have whatever apps on there you like, not just the pre-installed ones. Thes can be found in the Play app on your phone, some are free. There is a web browser called Opera Mini which uses less data.

Android is pretty flexible there is usually a widget which will let you turn data on/off, same for WiFi. Most androids will turn off the 3g when using WiFi anyway, so you could use the free WiFi instead.

You certainly do not have to have a 'max' tariff if you're not using that much data. Besides, every phone has "settings" where you configure things like, when to use data or when not to. It's your phone, you tell it what to do ;)

AT&T has Unlimited Non-smartphone plans for an extra $10 if you already have unlimited messaging and if you get a smartphone you pay either $25 for 300mb or $30 for 3gb of data.
I had an iPhone 3g for 1 & 1/2 years with data off and never got detected. I got a Captivate (Galaxy S) and loved it until I had to reset my phone and forgot to take out the sim card. AT&T detected I had a smartphone and but data on it for me. I got a LG-VU+ to get the charge off and put unlimited non-smartphone data on it.
All that to say I love the Android system and want to know if there is a Non-U.S. (or non subsidized in general) Android I can get so I can use my unlimited non-smartphone plan and them not detect I have a smartphone. I've discovered I like being able to picture message with friends and family and the data for when I need it is nice too but I can't afford the extra money for a smartphone data plan.
I know there has got to be someone with experience with this around here somewhere.

Note: before anyone brings it up, AT&T works a little better than Verizon where I live, Sprint only kinda works about 60+ miles from here and T-Mobile doesn't even have a store anywhere near here that I know of and My family plan is with AT&T anyway (I pay my 3rd + my own $10 data plan, dad didn't raise a slacker, I pay my own way where I can)
