Help Noob in Need of Direction

GadgetFan

Newbie
I recently purchased a Samsung Prevail and while I'm waiting for FedEx to deliver it I wanted to get everything ready to load on it.

After doing A LOT of reading I have decided to use:

One Click Root!
ShabbyMod .9
ODIN
ClockWorkMod Recovery
ROM Manager
ShootMe
AdFree
Titanium Backup
WirelessTether

Opinions on my choices?

Also, I've read that somewhere in all of this I'm suppose to make a backup of my phone, but I can't figure out if that is before I start modifying it or somewhere else in the process. :-/

Finally, while I taught myself how to program computers in the 70's and have taught myself several computer languages since, Android phones are way out of my purview. Gentle instructions in this process will be most gratefully received. :-}

WTIA for any and all help!

First and foremost, DO NOT USE ROM MANAGER. The CWM based recovery located as a sticky in all things root is what you want for prevail. ROM Manager WILL BRICK YOUR PHONE!

Second, Odin doesn't go on your phone it's a program used to restore your phone if you mess it up.(Anything that can still get into download mode)

After you run OneClickRoot, the first thing from your list you want to install is the CWM based recovery I mentioned before. After you get it flashed, you will make your backup by turning off your phone and then holding VOL up and the power button, then choose backup/restore.

Last, DO NOT INSTALL ROM MANAGER!!!!111oneoneoneoen Lol :P

After I got my phone yesterday I downloaded the drivers and hooked my phone up to my computer, but as far as I could tell my phone downloaded nothing from my computer.

I unistalled the drivers, reinstalled them, reconnected my phone and still nothing (other than my computer saying I had new hardware,)

What am I doing wrong?

installing the drivers does nothing to the phone .. they are for the computer to be able to talk to the phone so you can run the rooting and any mods you want

I ran the root program. It scrolled through the screens quite rapidly so I wasn't able to get any screen shots, but I did notice ~before it said it was rooted~ that it said that some files were missing.

Before I go any further I'd like to make sure it is really rooted. How can I do that, please?

WTIA!!!

check your apps if you have Super User there you should be rooted .. there are also root checker apps in the market if you want to be sure

some people have been having trouble with the one click root recently .. if your root failed i believe there are posts of an older version that should work or move to the odin thread and run one of the options there

Look in your app drawer for a app called superuser...

I got Superuser without having full root. Download ES File Explorer and go into the settings. Turn on Root Explorer, if superuser prompts you to allow or deny you have root access.

Btw, if you have a new phone and are having problems rooting with OneClick you can always use Odin and push the EE14 with CWM and HK1.2

It's not there. :(

............

Okay, Odin makes sense to me, as does ClockWorkMod Recovery, and I THINK I understand something about the EE14 (?About Phone -> Baseband version -> FROYO.EE14?), but you have me completely bumfuzzled with the rest of it. :o

On phone so I can't link. In the sticky in all things root titled Odin's download the one that says rooted EE14 with CWM and HK1.2.

On your phone, once you are sure the drivers are installed(that download comes with them), power off and then hold Camera + VOL down + power until you see yellow text that says downloading.

On your computer, run the Odin executable.

Plug your phone in to your computer via USB while in download mode.

Click on ops, boot, phone, and PDA and load the appropriate zips from the download. The EE14 one goes in PDA. Click start.

After your phone rebooted close Odin, you are done there. Your phone will now have root and CWM.

To verify, turn off phone and then hold VOL up + Power. After a couple screens you should be in CWM. Using volume up and down to navigate, camera to select, and power to go back, toto backup/restore and make a backup. If you bootloop you can power off and boot into CWM with volume up and power to restore your backup.

If all this works out, let me know and then you can shabby up.

I found

"DOWNLOAD EE14 ROOTED VERSION WITH CWM AND HROARKERNEL
MEGAUPLOAD - The leading online storage and file delivery service"

at 'Odin', but when I followed the link I got

"The file you are trying to access is temporarily unavailable. Please try again later."

I'll continue to check back.

If all this works out, let me know and then you can shabby up.
:D

Right click Odin and run as Admin, if that doesn't work we will have to bring in the big guns because I haven't seen that before. That is my best guess though.

It is and I am.

How do I log into the Admin account?

Depends on the computer and the OS. You should be able to add Admin privileges to your account in control panel>account settings. If it asks for a password it should be your password if you have one
If not there has to be a default pass, bit i wouldn't know that. I know there is a Linux program that will crack windows admin passwords but that is a whole different ballgame.

I've done everything I know to do or dare do and nothing is working for me.

Maybe this just isn't in the cards for my phone....:(

As I was preparing to move the downloaded file to my laptop (so I could try rooting my phone from it) it suddenly dawned on me to check the SD card slot. (I've never purchased a phone before that came with a memory card.) Eureka! After taking the card out and giving Odin another try, I had success. (Nothing like operator error... :o)

Once Odin was complete I checked for a Superuser in the apps; Bingo! Next I went into CWM and made a backup.

And now Shabby 0.9 is installed. :p

Do I continue to add programs or is there another step I should do first?
