NOOB: Launchers

A silly question, possibly, but one I have pondered and not found an answer:

What exactly is the "launcher", and why are there different ones?

I am a long time Mac person, so I understand the concept of a launcher in that regard. I'm just not sure I grasp the same idea as it relates to Android.

Anyone want to expound on this?

A launcher is where all your icons and widgets go. It's what's used to open all your apps. Each one is different from the other as to what features it offers. Like the Go Launcher can be themed to change the colors or appearance.
