Noob Question

Good afternoon Everyone!
I have what is probably a very noob question and I am sorry for in advance, but I can't find anything on it. I just made the switch from iOS to Android and bought the S5. I really love the phone and the OS with it. I was wondering how come notifications don't show up on the lock screen as well as the phone (screen) doesn't light up when the screen is off and you get a notification. Is there any work around to this?

I figured it out, have to use the default messaging app. I haven't figured out if gmail is set to push for emails. I can't seem to find out how to get to that setting.
