Noob rooting question

Just rooted my Sprint Hero :D and it was easier than I thought. Can I download programs that require higher firmware than 1.5? Does it matter what custom ROM I have?
 
Check the sticky at the top of this forum for the current roms available for the Sprint Hero. You can only install apps for 1.5 unless you install a Rom built on a higher os build, but I dont know if they have any non-beta versions running higher than 1.5 so not everything works properly.
 
as far as I know the 1.6+ ROM's all have a few bugs yet, and aren't exactly ideal for using as an everyday ROM. From what I can tell, the two best ROMs (opinion of course) are Modaco's newest one (2.2 I believe), and Fresh 1.1. Modaco's is going to be updated a bit tomorrow, to remove WaveSecure and make it an optional pack. It's also based on the new kernel, and certainly seems fast, but I haven't noticed any major differences in speed between that and Fresh 1.1.
