Noob to android need help

Hello everyone. I've been a apple consumer for a long time and never really wanted android devices, but after the seeing yet another very slight upgrade with the iPhone 5 from my 4s and the insult of my ipad 3 being outdated in 6 months I've decided to try other OS' I bought a nexus 7 which I really like and planned to buy a galaxy note 2 in a week or so, but after using my nexus for a a while I have some issues concerning privacy I really need clarification on. For some reason google pinyin ime has appeared on my nexus I didn't install it, and it's wants access to my microphone so it can record when ever it wants to without my permission! WTF? And I've noticed a lot of other apps wanting the same thing. And other apps wanting access to my calls for making calls and to see if I'm on a call. I looked up at what all the permissions mean and what they want to do but I want to know why they want to record without my permission? I find this very invasive and tbh it's a deal breaker for me. Can anyone on here clarify this for me please

A lot of the things it wants to do just help the app work better.

Usually google wants this information to make your experience better...

Like i really dont know what "pinyin ime" is, but Google usually wants access to your emails, calls, texts, longitudinal coordinates haha...

The only reason they want to know all this is so they can use like your email info to update Google Now to let you know, "hey you have a package to be delivered today" or, "hey do you want to check in at Chipotle, i noticed you were in one"

Relatively speaking if the app wants access to something more than likely the app utilizes that phone function too, like Google needs access to the Voice command because it uses the voice command feature in its' apps and it needs to work alongside the one already present on your device.

I hope this all makes sense and also welcome to the forums! :)

Please feel free to elaborate on anything i missed!

Boom.

Android tells you what it wants to do up front so you can choose not to allow it. This is how it PROTECTS your privacy. No one cares who you're talking to. No, big brother isn't after you. It's simply so it can use the microphone when you request it to.

Thanks, that kind of clears some things up. But I'm still wary of the fact my device could be recording me without my permission or me knowing about it. It's a very invasive thing to be doing. And what happens to the recordings? Who's listening to them?

It's not, and nothing. The phone doesn't turn on the Mic on its own. The permission is to turn it on whenever you ask it to. There are no recordings stored, so nothing to worry about.

Thanks guys, now I know what it's all about it makes sense. Feel better now as I was really looking forward to getting the note 2 until this confused me. But I'm back on track now and looking forward to getting it again. Thanks again for all your help guys.
