Help Nook branded tablets, worth it?

Hi all. I am looking to replace my aging and troubled Nexus 7 (2012) tablet. I'm looking to spend around $150 USD. I was wondering if the Nook branded galaxy tablets were worth it, Or does the B&N software prevent updating and other features that a more open tablet would have. Typically my tablet is the only computer I travel with. it is used mostly for reading, web surfing, viewing pictures..from cloud or memory, and writing.
