Help not enough memory for contacts to upgrade

a friend mine has the mytouch 3g and it says that she doesnt have enough memory to upgrade her contacts. The strange thing is that she got the phone BRAND NEW and it did this to her. I tried doing a master reset on the phone, but the factory reset setting wasnt in the sd and phone storage menu. I tried doing a master reset by booting into recovery, but i ran out of time to actually test it out. As anyone else had this problem?

Yes, the phone memory very quickly fills up, yet the SD card has 8GB of storage with about 7.5 GB available.

Pretty dumb machine that can't move apps to the SD card when the phone memory fills up.
