Help Not enough space on device storage question

Hi, new here and have tried to find the solution to this, but still struggling with the 'not enough space on device storage' error that I'm getting. I've cleared the cache on all my apps, I've moved what I can to the SD card, but the main thing I'm struggling with is that when I look at my device storage in settings, it reads as follows...

System 4.46GB
Used space 8.9GB
Cache 69.51MB
Misc 2.09GB
Available space 496MB

However, when I click through on the Used space, it lists...

Apps 4.58GB
Pictures 171MB
Audio 108KB
Downloads 102MB

That doesn't total the 8.9GB of used space. Help? I've done the *#9900# thing, I've deleted the big apps that I don't use, but I don't think I'm heavy on storage. Seems a nonsense to have an SD card in there that I can't really use to relieve the problem. Currently I can't refresh one of my email inboxes (get the storage error).

Can anyone help/advise. I've been so vocal about how good the Galaxy is to all the Apple devotees who surround me at work, I'm in danger of showing a fault! All help gratefully received.

Hello and welcome to Android Forums therealutted :)

Sorry to learn you are having problems. Here are a couple of suggestions that may help...

1. Clear your cache partition as per #1.3 of S5 Lollipop Update Problems - Dummies Guide

2. Install an app, free from the Play Store, called Clean Master. Whilst I am not usually a big fan of this app, it does scan your system and offers recommendations on files that can be cleaned or removed.

Failing that, a Factory Data Reset, as per post #2 of the aforementioned guide, will clear a lot of detritus from your phone.

Swift work - thanks ironass. Wiped the cache partition, but that didn't work. Downloaded Clean Master (only after deleting an app to free up the space!). Hate the ads, but it's done the trick and freed up a chunk of space. So a big THANK YOU for the suggestion. No idea what the original problem was, but the app was simple to use and it saved my phone, so that's good enough for me. I'll run it for a few weeks and then if it carries on behaving, I'll delete the app - I can always re-install if it starts playing up again. Thanks again.
