Not getting 2nd text notification

Here is my problem. I get a text message, the phone will notify me with a sound and an Icon. But if I get another text (like a reply) from that person, it is silent. My work around is I will close out the app, and sometimes it will give me the 2nd text notification. Has this been happening to anyone else?

So I can text someone a question, put the phone down, and they will reply and I will not get a notification. In turn, I miss the text cuz the notification did not happen.

If the SMS app is in use, the audible notifications don't seem to work.
Things worked much better with 4.4.4

however, with Textra I get the vibration which I can feel or "hear" if close enough to the phone.
