Help not making/receiving calls consistently

This happens about 25% of the time. I
'll dial a number of a regular contact. the phone will say 'dialling' but I'll not hear it ringing.
After about 20 seconds I'll hear a 'ding' and see 'call ended' When talking to the person I tried to call, they say that their phone never rang.
I've also has the reverse. someone rings me, they hear it ringing for a while before going to voicemail. My phone hasn't rung, neither do I see any missed calls.
In both cases I'm seeing a strong signal and have a good amount of charge in the battery. When I called the carrier (Virgin Mobile UK) they said there were no network problems.

Has anyone else had a similar experience or do I have an intermittent fault?

There could be a couple of causes of this. I would advise first trying an update/repair as below and if this does not work then please ask your network provider for a replacement SIM.

1. Before you start you have to download the PC Companion software and install it on your PC.
2. Once installed on your PC, double-click the PC Companion icon on your desktop to start the update. Note! For some models you will be prompted to do a backup prior to the update and then restore.
3. Install and open PC Companion then select Support Zone.
4. Phone Software Update.
5. Start.
6. Repair Phone
7. Continue
8. Accept data removal
9. Next
10. Wait for prepare
11. Select Phone
12. Follow the connection steps

Turns out the anwer was quite simple. I spoke to a Virgin tech who actually knew what he was saying (Gasps in amazement!) turns out the phone I was calling (my wife's) only had a 2G sim, and I was calling 3G. A new 3G SIM from Virgin, and it's all good now.
