Help Not receiving any notifications when phone is locked

Hi, I am on wifi and I have the hotmail app on my phone.

When I send myself an email it notifies me right away, but ONLY if I have my screen on. If I lock my phone it doesn't send me a notification unless I unlock my phone. Is this normal? Shouldn't it send me the notification even if my phone's locked like how text msgs do it?

This happens for all apps, like gmail, WhatsApp, etc.

I'm on Jelly Bean 4.1.1

Do you have a "always on mobile network" setting? My guess is the device is disconnecting it's data when the screen is off. Perhaps there is a setting to change this?

Yes, i have that setting. I've tried both on and off and no difference. I dont have a data plan anyways so I dont think that'll effect it.

I read this on an apple forum posted by a random user. I don't know if it's true, but if it is then it would make a lot of sense.

"You need a recent Wireless-N router not wireless-g or draft-n but 802.11n router that supports the low power state wifi connection and instant reconnect from sleep.

Wireless 802.11g disconnects when you sleep but 802.11n keeps your device connected in a low power way to support push notifications."

Under wifi settings (advanced), do you have the option for keeping wifi on while asleep checked?

I doubt it is the router causing this issue. My Nexus connects to a newer router (802.11n) at home, and a prehistoric 802.11b router at a friend's house, and a 802.11g at work. I get the Email notifications in all cases.

I was about to suggest trying to use the regular Android mail app for your hotmail (just in case it was the hotmail specific app that was causing the issue) - but noticed your post stating that gmail is doing the same thing.

Sorry, can't think of anything else. You could try to find a 802.11n router and see if that solves the issue (as I said, my Gnex doesn't exhibit that symptom on other routers).

One other thing - you say that it is not notifying you till you unlock. What notification are you referring to? LED blinking? and/or sound alert? and/or vibrate alert? Do you have lightflow or a similar app installed for the LED blink alert?

I don't get any notifications at all. I have to wait a couple of seconds after i unlock the phone to receive any notifications. Also downloads stop when I lock my phone :(

bummer - that would get irritating in a hurry... sorry to hear about this. Hopefully other folks will have some suggestions to try out.

And your friend's router is 802.11g? or n? (just curious if 'n' is actually needed for this to work)

Thanks for the update :)

Not sure, but I'm pretty sure wireless G works as well. Its just the crappy telus router I had that was causing all the problems. I found a couple threads where people with the same telus router were having the same problems

I'm using a different router now with wireless draft N and it fixed the problem
