Help Not receiving sms

Hey guess I don't know exactly why but for some odd reason whenever my little brother sends me a text message, my nexus 5 won't receive it (with stock sms app) yet my tablet does through hangouts. Does any one how to fix this? I really hate hangouts

First thing to check is that you have SMS turned on. It's possible you accidently hit the "not now" option and the prompt has disappeared.

Go in to Settings>SMS and see if it says "SMS Disables" - if so hit that.

I recommend 8SMS as an easy to use SMS app which is more like the old SMS app from ICS/JB.

Thanks for the reply and SMS is turned off on my N5 for hangouts. I don't understand why it only happens with him and not anyone else.

Unless you want to use a different SMS app, my understanding is that has to be turned on to get messages

How does your tablet receive SMS?

As GuitarG20 wrote, you will need to enable SMS on hangouts on your N5 to get SMS using hangouts.
If hangouts SMS is turned off, how do you get any SMS on your N5? Do you use a third party SMS app? (you referred to "stock" sms app - so trying to figure out what that stock SMS app is. On the N5, hangouts *is* the stock SMS app)

Yes I want to use the CM11 stock sms app, not hangouts.

Hangouts is installed on my nexus 7 but I don't use it. And I'm on CM11 not stock, so yes it Is a 3rd party app. Sorry for the confusion

I am having the same problem I can see most texts but I have a freind who I will text and I do not see her replys. Yes my sms is on and I switched over to the one that was recommeded above 8sms. I can see her replys in group text only..

I don't receive texts from companies that I signed up for, so GP, hairdresser, dentist, chemist, etc. This started on my S2 using the Handcent app and is the same on my Nexus 5. Have used Handcent for nearly 4 years without any other issues.

Following on from my previous post ^^ I tried Hangouts for a while to see if that solved the problem but it doesn't. Yet, I receive messages from my mail order company, bank, and charitable organisations I've donated to, to my Handcent app without any issue. Handcent themselves say that their app has never accepted such messages which is rubbish, because my old phone did. Unfortunately since changing I've restored my old phone so not got any old messages to prove it.

Could it be a service/provider restriction?

Going to see O2 Guru tomorrow to see if they can help. Currently using GoSMS and awaiting a text from GP (from Friday onwards in theory) to confirm appt next Tuesday so will see if that works.

It's possible that because my phone is registered with the Telephone Preference Service, it's blocking the text messages and/or the phone is seeing them as 'spam'. So I'm de-registering my phone as we speak and I've got 2 upcoming appointments which, if de-registered in time, may or may not prove that this is/was the case.

UPDATE: Received a reminder message from my hairdresser this morning so hopefully, sorted.
