Try installing a different messaging app from the play store, such as textra and post your results
Have you verified your apn settings? I'd often didn't need to do anything with other phones, but with this one I needed to completely enter a new apn setting and enable it.
APN should only affect MMS. That said, if the sender is using MMS for group messaging that could well be the issue.
What carrier are you on, unlocked or carrier version phone?

Your problem must be originateing in the Google play services..if this isn't working well or is outdated well give you issues in the text side..
