My new HTC Wildfire with my PC to update contacts and diary. I was able to do this initially but now get advice that it is not connected event thought eh phone is connected with the PC and has charged it

You might try unpluggin the phone and rebooting both the phone and the PC and then plugging the phone back into the PC. I know HTC phones use HTC's sync'ing software so it would be best if you asked the question in the HTC Wildfire Forum, where other users who have the same phone can help you out.
