Help Note 2 poor cell service, no signal, dropped calls

Hello all,
Newb here, first post. I have a Samsung Note 2. Great phone but about 4 to 5 weeks ago it started having bad service.

Symptoms are:
Dropped calls
Cant call
Cant txt at certain times until cell picks up better signal
Static during calls
Phone cuts out during calls and I miss part of the conversation
And more similar...

When all this happens (usually my house) I have either 1 or 2 bars or no signal at all. It switches between the 3 frequently. In other parts of my city I have much better service but it still switches frequently between 4g and nothing.

Other things Ive noticed are
Network:unknown
Signal Strenght: -109dBm 2 asu +/- 5
Mobile network type: unknown
Service state:
Mobile network state: disconnected

Phone model is Samsung-sgh-1317
Android Version is 4.4.2 (phone says its latest and will only let me check every 24hrs)
all apps are updated.
ATT put a new sim card in the phone and did some trouble shooting/resetting on their end. Their only other suggestion is to wipe everything (waiting to back everything up. I need a good txt back up app as I have LOTS of txt messages from clients I need to save. Recommendations would be great).
Phone is currently locked, but I can get the code from ATT.

My house is standard construction with shingle roof. No major metal or leaves on trees to mess with signal. Been here for over a year and had great service up to abt 5 weeks ago. No changes other than listed have taken place recently. Other Iphone has 4g here.

Phone is 2 yrs and 2 months old. Its been dropped here and there but its lived in an otter box its whole life (the tough expensive defender series one). No water damage.

What does this issue sound like?
What parts do I need to replace to fix it? (I've seen antennas for sale but a repair tech told me its a whole assembly with an antenna, charging port and something else.)
Should I unlock the phone?
Can this phone be hooked up to a range booster?
Thanks!
