Help Note 4 microphone issues

gloriousnumber1

Android Expert
So I've replaced my phone twice because people can't hear me when I make a call, unless I put it on speaker. I use Bluetooth audio and voice through my car stereo and that works fine.

The problem is when I'm not in my car. I've tested it enough to be sure the microphone works. However, there must be some software issue making it do this. I've ran all updates and factory reset each time including this unit. It doesn't even help when I shut Bluetooth off on my phone.

Verizon doesn't know anything, they just send me another refurb. I know hardware isn't bad though.

Help! It's so annoying not to be able to make a call or answer one without the whole world listening to their end. However, if I don't do that, the person on the other end can't hear me but I hear them just fine.

Do you have a case on your phone?

The reason I ask about this is because there is a known issue with Verizon's version of the Galaxy Note 4 phone.

For some unknown reason, Verizon changed the location of the microphone on their version of the Note 4 and most cases made for thisnphone will cover up the microphone on the Verizon model.

Samsung Galaxy Note 4 phones from all other carriers have the microphone in the same place except Verizon alone who strangely moved the microphone jack several millimeters to the left.

Because of this change in the Verizon version specifically, the vast majority of cases designed for the Note 4 will fit perfectly only so long as you have any another carrier other than Verizon (such as Tmobile for one example)but will cover up and obstruct the microphone if you have Verizon and make it so that people cannot hear if you talk directly on the phone with most regular cases.

This is a well known issue and if you go search for phone cases for the Note 4 on Amazon and simply read many of the user review comments posted regarding most of the cases shown, you will quickly find that many case customers keep talking about this very same issue over and over again. Some of these people actually posted photos showing exactly how many of the cases out there are misaligned when using the Verizon version of the phone.

Case models which are designed to be open and are not covering the bottom side of the phone are usually not a problem but those with a cutout hole won't work unless you modify the case or have a special version made for Verizon.

Most cases which are tight fitting and have a hole cut out for the microphone very often cover up the microphone when using a Note 4 from Verizon while they fit perfectly for everyone else.

Several of the bigger name case manufacturers have gone ahead and made two versions of their cases (namely one model for Verizon and another for everyone else) to deal with this issue.

Many people who are on Verizon and went out and bought a normal Note 4 case have been resorting to usually cutting small holes in their cases over the microphone to fix this issue themselves. Others have just gone
out and bought a new case.

Exchanging phones won't help you if every phone they give you is the Verizon version. Assuming you have this same issue that most Verizon users have with the Note 4, you would actually either need a different case or modify your existing case that you have.

You said you tried multiple phones which immediately makes me think your problem is not the phone itself nor that you have a Note 4 rather that you have Verizon as your service carrier who again for reasons beyond me changed the location of the microphone.

Hope that information helps ...

Thanks for the information. I have taken the case off and the problem remained the same. I bought the Speck case from Verizon when I got the phone, all in store. The openings in the bottom accommodate the microphone just fine. Is that the little hole on the bottom left or right? Either way they are both exposed and not covered. Anyone have another idea?
