Note 4 Pen Vs Note 5 Pen..found something missing

Dear All,

Everybody here is hyping over the Note 5 s-Pen, I found the unique feature I mostly used in note 4 found missing in my Note 5 Pen. What!? Am I stupid that I cannot find it or Samsung fooled me saying Note 5 Pen is better that Note 4.

Here we go, using your S-pen in Note 4, when you select an area of the screen, it will enable the text and shows a letter T at bottom right of your selected area, where you can copy to clipboard and extract the text alone from the image you selected out of your screen.

Can anyone please tell me how I can use this feature in Note5? Please stop saying Note 5 S-Pen is better, means it should have additional feature not removing the feature already has in NOte 4

Thanks
Suren

Hey I feel you on that. I miss that feature too and I hate that Samsung did away with it. However, I've found a way to do it, it takes a bit of extra time but there definitely is a solution:
1) Go to Galaxy apps (Samsung Playstore)
2) Search for app, "Optical Reader", download and install it
3) Now select the image or picture with words you need to have extracted and save that clipping in Gallery.
4) Open Optical Reader and click the icon that looks like a gallery logo. Now select the image you saved, the one you need the text extracted from, and it's done.

Now I agree with you that that feature is missing and I don't like doing all this crap just to identify text because it was awesome before in note 4 but it's a workaround. Hope it helps.

Doesn't Smart Select do that on the Note 5?

Better is asubjective term. Just because that feature (which is not actually a pen feature, it's a software feature) is gone doesn't mean it's better or worse.
Better could mean structurally, feels better in the hand, feels better while writing or drawing (better control), smoother moving across the screen, etc.
Some may just like the clicker.

I agree.... :)

I was trounced upon as a youngster when I proudly showed off my new camera to a friend's "Engineer crapo" father. :(

I said "it takes really pretty pictures".... :)

That SOB trounced on me with "ever take a picture of the city dump?"

so, we need to use emoticons, and try to describe our viewpoints on a "feature" we really like, or don't appreciate as much as someone else. ( I'm being politic here, unlike I was 30 years ago )

Which versions have the Extract Text feature? Because I'm interested in getting a Note 5, and I'd like to have a model that has this feature.

I think Verizon is the only one that doesn't have it, but optical reader can do it, sharing the selected text with Google goggles does it also.

Just tried smart select on my note 5 (I'm with T-mobile) the "T" only comes up when you use the lasso shape and then it seems to only show the number "1" as the text you just lassoed. This was in a news article. in an email, it worked fine, maybe something to do with copyright in the article?

Have an AT&T version of the Note 5. Feature is missing as well. I did read that Samsung will be bringing it back in a software update.

From what I've read online, the N920GUBU2AOK3 firmware update added the feature back into Smart Select. Whether it is as functional as it was previously, I cannot confirm since I haven't received my Note 5 (it's scheduled to arrive Christmas day, yay!), but I'll look into how well it works compared to what I've seen with the Note 4 in videos.

Well, I can confirm that it is back with the latest update (refer to attached picture), however it does not return in full glory, as it only works on text you could select by holding down the button on the S Pen...

Can you OCR The text?

You can OCR text that you can copy using the method of holding the button on the S Pen down and highlighting the text. So to make that clearer, you can't OCR text in images or, say, the names under app icons using Smart Select, which is one of the reasons the OCR feature was so great on the Note 4, because it worked on ALL text (from my understanding), now it's just a way to copy text that you can highlight and copy anyway. The only way to OCR text in images is to use something like Optical Reader or another OCR app.
