TLDR: Phone kept crashing, reflashed latest firmware w/Odin, phone now only boots to recovery mode or into download mode.

I posted this at Android Central but didn't receive help:

First Post: I have had my note 4 for about a year now and it has recently began to act funny. About a month ago it began to randomly freeze and slow down. Now it does it more often (about once an hour on average) and just this week it has been crashing randomly. Yesterday it crashed and went into recovery mode, displaying the android guy and "downloading, do not turn off target" with "could not perform regular boot" at the top of the screen among other text. It's done this twice now and the only way to get out of recovery mode is to pull the battery. It also will take a long time to boot up, or get stuck in a boot loop for 5 or so minutes.

I have done a factory reset and unmounted the SD card (someone suggested it may be corrupt and causing this). I've also cleared the cache partition to try to fix this, but while booting into recovery it said it was installing a system update for 15 minutes, then said something like "no target" (cant remember exactly) with a dead android guy. After clearing the cache partition, it got stuck in another boot loop and again randomly went into the recovery "download" mode. So far i have been able to get it to boot back up again after each crash, and i can't find a pattern as to when the phone freezes and crashes.

Second Post: So I decided to reflash the firmware myself. I downloaded ODIN, the Samsung USB drivers, and the most recent Sprint Note 4 release I could find (android 5.1.1, specifically a file called "ALL_SPT_N910PVPU4COG5_N910PSPT4COG5_CL5303209_QB5691107_REV00_user_low_ship_MULTI_CERT.tar.md5.zip" from theandroidsoul.com). Following instructions, I flashed the firmware successfully, according to ODIN, but when the phone was supposed to reboot at the end of the flashing process, it appeared to stay off. Pressing the power button or any other combination of buttons did nothing until i removed the battery. The phone booted directly into recovery mode, so i did a hard reset from the recovery screen and flashed the firmware again.

Now my phone either boots directly into recovery mode or directly into download mode. When i tell it to reboot or turn off at the recovery menu it will become unresponsive with a black screen until i pull the battery. I have tried flashing the firmware again, but with the same results. I am not sure what to do at this point. After the second flash, the phone appeared to begin booting normally, displaying the green android guy with a small loading bar underneath, but the loading bar got half way and disappeared, then the phone went into recovery mode. UGH.

Hopefully you fine gentlemen and/or gentleladies can help me resolve this issue.

OP here, I tried downloading the firmware from Sammobile three times, but my download fails after about 5-ish hours due to my connection. I am in the process of downloading another firmware file from XDA, and it appears to be the exact same file I tried previously (I just noticed). I expect to run into the same problem. On the off chance that this firmware puts me in the same position I am already in, does anyone have any other possible solutions? Anyone had this problem before? I am currently deployed and can try pretty much anything that doesn't involve taking the phone to my carriers' store or to... well, anywhere really.

Reflashed the firmware again and my phone has been in the same state. It will occasionally boot into download mode or get stuck in a boot loop for a few minutes. It usually reboots 4 or 5 times throughout the day randomly and constantly slows down and freezes. I ordered a new battery on the off chance the 220v European outlets here did something to it but that hasn't fixed anything. I was able to download the latest Samsung update via WiFi today and just installed it. I restarted the phone and got a "kernel panic upload mode" screen (pic attached) about a second after the phone had already booted up. Once again, I am deployed and cant get to a dealer or repair shop. Text at the top of the kernel panic screen says the following:

Kernel Panic!

KRAIT INFO
Panic caller : mdm_subsys_powerup+0xf0/0x12c
Panic Msg : CP BOOT UP FAIL - NEED CP DUMP
Thread : mdm_helper_prox:417

pm8841_rev : 0x0

Wait...
Done!
UDC START

Once again, thanks. Hopefully there is a solution.

Edit: This is the first time I have seen the "Kernel Panic" screen and I was able to successfully boot up after resetting the phone from the kernel panic screen.

Edit 2: Additionally, the "Checking device status..." notification is constantly displayed.

My note 4 is doing the same thing. I have no idea where to start. Im going to follow this hoping for a solution.

Well, first thing I would think is that you flashed the wrong file. Doesn't matter if the file was for Sprint. Your carrier may be carrying several baseband versions of the phone. I know my carrier carried at least 3 different Note 2's, and I couldn't flash the files for the other two on mine otherwise I'd brick it.

I have the EXACT same issues with my NOTE4..I hate this phone...Heats up, reboots 20 times a day, kernel panic, another droid screen, the name escapes me...so damm frustrating. I want to get rid of it but when I attempt to tranfser everything to the computer it says phone is empty, and my phone is full of pics. Sometimes it just turns off and won't restart unless I take the battery out for an hour or so.
