Note 8 Getting Oreo Now

Nope - I check for updates three or four times a day. Verizon has never been one to quickly push out an update LOL

I keep forgetting that Bixby can do this! Instead of opening Settings and going through all that, just tell Bixby "check for system updates" and BAM! Done!

The Darling Bride's S8 Plus has been on it for a week now (she still doesn't know how to use the new features, even though I went through them with her... heck, she doesn't use most of the OLD features), but I'm still waiting. We do have cause, however, to be optimistic: those of us with carrier-branded phones should see the OTA roll out any day now. I would expect the unlocked phones to take the full 2-3 weeks. So... I'll continue my habit of checking for system update four times a day...

:p

And this is the really weird thing about Samsung USA: that unlocked, unbranded phones typically take longer (sometimes much longer) to get updates than the carrier-branded models. Since the latter have more steps to go through to release an update does this mean that Samsung hold the unlocked model's update back? And this is the opposite of every other manufacturer, or of Samsung themselves elsewhere.

Given the power of the carriers in the US I'd almost believe it if someone said that Samsung accept an incentive to let the carriers release updates first - except that for exactly the same reason it can't really matter to the carriers. So it's just... weird.

Yeah, I'll admit this is backwards! I remember the unlocked Note 4 & 5 getting updated while Verizon dragged along with soak tests. I'm inclined to agree with you, and it makes me wonder if this will be a trend going forward. Is it an effort to compel consumers into buying branded devices by delaying updates to unlocked versions? Is this the first sign of the eventual end of unlocked phones?

Well in the rest of the world the unlocked market is ever-growing (leaving aside countries where locked phones were never a thing, or even illegal, in the first place), so globally speaking I don't think there's any threat. And even in the States I'm not aware of anyone other than Samsung doing this. But it is something I've noticed unlocked US Samsung owners complaining about in the last year or two.

Just got Oreo update and I'm on ATT

Will the new Oreo roll out for note 8 change the audio at all from mono to stereo..if not can this be done or the ear piece used at the same time as bottom speaker to create stereo? The new s9 has stereo speakers and no doubt the note 9 when released in August will follow suit. My question is also the note was a lot of money and I do listen to a lot of music as well as use all note features..are people not in a rush to upgrade their phones from note 8 to s9 or note 9..why having paid all that money in the first place do people wait at least two years? Any help on above would be appreciated

I don't know... I wouldn't want to try and enjoy music with even two tinny little speakers. After trying over a dozen cheaper Bluetooth headsets, I finally got the Bose Quiet Comfort 35s and they are AWESOME. The noise canceling is eerie. If you really want to enjoy music with a phone, don't rely on the speakers to do anything but annoy you.

BTW my favorite Oreo feature so far is the long-pressing an icon to get more information about a notification without opening the app. That's freaking legit!

it appears that they've removed the background feature from the AOD clocks. Why take something like that away? Other than that, everything seems OK, haven't noticed any major issues yet, nor have I played around with any of the new features yet. Using Nova Launcher with Tesla Unread counts, I've already had notification badges. I do notice that some of the fonts seem smaller than before. If I bump font size up to the next setting, it's too big, so I'm having trouble finding a happy medium. Will explore new themes and fonts to use and see if I can make it look less dorky.

One thing I am not pleased with, though, is that the color of all the open apps is identical now! When I scroll through my open apps, I can't rely on unique colors anymore to know which is which... I have to read the names. Why thar was done just boggles my mind...

Just noticed that when you are in navigation mode in Google maps and you minimize it, it will overlay on your current app or home page.

So we went to the wilderness. Mom's house has no internet and very little cell service. I was struggling to find a place in the house with any bars of signal and even 1x data, and still couldn't get a text message in or out. Darling Bride was on the porch with her Galaxy S8 Plus - making phone calls and getting photos! WTH!

I finally looked in my Wireless Networks settings and found that Oreo (or something) had reset to Global instead of LTE/CDMA! I don't have much signal, but at least it's 4G... maybe that will help battery drain.

Tmobile said they were rolling them out Sunday night. I checked Manuel updates yesterday and it was there. Updated ultra fast.
