Help NOTE 8 & Ok Google

twobrich

Lurker
Maybe someone can shed some light on an issue I'm having. How do you set up Google assistant on the Note 8, I have looked everywhere in setting. I tries pressing the home button to look for the little blue draw icon so that I can access the section to which I can link apps to use with my home automation.
I use to be able to use in on my Note 4 but now can't set it up on the Note 8.

Samsung want you to use bixby.

Do you have a 3rd party launcher?

I have Alexa and ok google on the Note 8.. they all play in the sandbox with bixby nicely.

Did you even setup google with your voice yet?

Just the standard launcher on my phone and no other appliances, I have set up Google with my voice and am using the English ( US ) currently.

Are you trying to connect devices? There's an app called Google home, I had to download it from the playstore but it easily detects all my devices

Or am I missing your question?

No. Just want to use my phone and say Ok Google..... switch on lights. It's the Ewelink app which you need to add to your Google assistant. Once you have done that it will allow you to say Ok Google..... switch on lights.

If I go to my Google on my phone. Tap the top left menu button there is no services or assistant options to switch it on or gain access to enable it.

Go into settings, scroll down to google, then scroll down to "search", then google settings are in there. Maybe re-set your voice with the app.

I have bixby, google and Alexa on the note 8 , and they all each stay in their lane and work when called upon.

I have set up my ok Google works fine. If I tap the Google icon then go into settings below your account you logged into there are a list of options there. In my account. I should be able to see options for home control https://support.google.com/assistant/answer/7314909?hl=en&ref_topic=7172703

I don't have the little blue icon with the little draw in it nor do I have the home control option they mention to select. The link above is what I am trying to follow which will then be able me to link the Ewelink app resulting in if I say Ok Google on my phone switch on lights will switch on

On the google NOW home page i tap on the 3 stacked lines top left, go down to services, and under that is home control, just under music.

I don’t know what you mean by “blue icon with the little draw in it”.

I use Alexa so i dont have any things to test with goog, but that’s where I see the setting for home control.

Ok I understand that. But if I do the same I do not have an option for home control this is a screen shot from my Google this is all it gives me. I have also circled in red the little blue icon I have been referring to.😃

Could it be possible that another account such as Samsung account clashing or maybe even the language not allowing it to work? As far as I am aware I have given Google permission to all that it needs. Just throwing it out there.🤔

That blue icon is unnecessary. The steps are still the same — “settings, home control”. That’s exactly what i have on the phone now as you see in the earlier screen shot.

What carrier are you on? I’d you have the unlocked version?

And please pardon this dumb question, but you CAN say “ok google” and the google assistant will pop up yes?

If so, how did you set that up? Most likely the settings to get to home control are in there.

Again I have a T-Mobile variant note 8.

Haha. Yes I can say Ok Google and the assistant pops up and I can ask it what ever. In my settings there is no home control option.

I am in South Africa on a RSA carrier Vodacom. Nothing changed on that side when I got rid of my Note 4 with the Google assistant working I might add to my note 8 and now I can't get the ok Google assistant to work. Same account all the same.

ahhhhhh,l I see said the blind man..

ok well the reason there are discrepancies is because you have a different device firmware. I should have asked this before.. :D

perhaps reach out to your carrier or contact samsung in your part of the world to find out where it could be. I am sorry I can't be of more help.. :(

Thanks very much for all the assistant. Sorry I prob5should have mentioned that in my first msg. When setting up ok Google you have to change the default language to either US or UK and then the Ok Google will work.

Thanks again.

26/17......... UPDATE!!!!!!

Ok after a lot of trial and error with the above I came to the conclusion that I needed to wait for Google to roll out the version compatible for RSA version mobiles. It has been bugging me that just something was not right with the whole thing not working and theoretical it should work so I persisted with the matter and through a lot of frustration this is how I got it to work.

I cleared the Google memory and cache and joined as Google as a Beta tester. Once all of that was done I tapped on the Google app and set up the normal setting and voice model. I made sure that the language was set to English UK. I then went into setting on the Note 8 and tap on General Management tap on Language and inputs, there change the default language to UK or US personally I have it set to UK.
That was it I had a notification on the phone greeting me to Google Assistant.

I thought I write this and hope it makes sense and possible helps someone who was struggling like I was.
