Note4 vs. Nexus 6?

I agree with T_C, if you use the pen a lot then you'll likely want to stick with the Note series. Or if you love TW, you probably don't want to go Nexus.
If neither of those things are true, then you do have a quandary, that really no one can answer for you, since it boils down to personal preference and in this case you're the only person who's preference matters.

Yup. I was frustrated of my Note 2 not getting the OS upgrades from Google. Only had 1 big upgrade since I bought the Note 2, its still on v4.3

So this time around, wondering if I still stick with Note (possibly end up with the same frustration I had with Note 2 OS upgrade) or go with a Nexus. Wondering is it such a big deal getting all the OS upgrades from Google as soon as it is released?

When Nova is running, does that mean TW or any other Samsung bloatware is suppressed (i.e. not running in the background)?

Does Note 4 still support moving Apps to the memory card and running from the card? Still the same after Android L update?

As for the Pen, I do like the Pen but to be honest don't use it much. Mainly for clipping out odd shapes of pictures and sending it via Whatsapp.

Cheers.

You can disable a lot of the Samsung bloatware in the app manager. While it remains in the system storage, it doesn't utilize any resources after that. As far as TW running in the background, I do not think that it does, although I can't say that for sure.

I am running Google Now as my launcher on my S4, and I do not notice any lag or drag.

I had both Note 2, 3 and now 4.. If you are coming from a Note 2 this will be a huge jump in performance and software upgrade. You will be quite pleased and just like LaTuFU you can disable the bloat ware unlike in the note 2..

good luck!

If the Nexus 6 had a micro SD slot, I would of looked hard at it, but since it doesn't I was choosing between the Note and the Edge. I decided on the note since it was out already but I do have enough days left ot return it to check out the Edge. I might go look at the Nexus just for fun next week.

I think the Note 4 has been a bit of a disappointment to me, I am really struggling to get the voice activation (OK Google) working properly (which is the main reason I bought it). It's had a few crashes already (where I've had to remove the battery to reset it), it's done a few stupid things (like why would it automatically connect to my mum's wifi over the road, that has Poor signal, and not my own wifi network with Excellent strength? No phone I've ever owned has been stupid enough to actually do this when enabling Wifi...). I'm just a bit disappointed with it and wish I'd waited for the Nexus now. Even the S-pen, it's always misinterpreting my handwriting even though it's clear as day, so I'm finding it useless for writing text and having it interpret it in to a text message etc. This phone advertises features I thought I'd use but when it actually comes down to it, the implementation is poor so I can't use them.

The Note 4 is better on paper but when it comes down to it... :(
I might be trying to return this phone on the grounds it's faulty and not fit for purpose. And get the Nexus.

Best to get what you will be happy with. I am happy with the N4 and IMO is the best overall device available to date.

A bonus is the data reception is better than I initially thought. Noticeable difference with my S4 and on par it seems with my son's DNA.

Added: The Nexus 6 has no SD, so that and the even larger size makes the N4 even better to me in comparison.

I am not a rom hopper or obsessed with always having the newest OS.

I would suggest trying a factory reset and/or taking the phone to be looked at by a technician.

Everything you describe sounds like something is wrong with the phone. It should not be performing that way.

here's why I got the Note 4 over the nexus 6 .
The note 4 has:
-spen
-expendable memory
-better camera
-Interchangeable battery
-Multi Window support
-and again I must add s-pen
-one hand operation mode

I bought the Note 4 so I can personally evaluate it. I'm so happy that my Note 3 has remained fast and fun, nothing new in the features list of the N4 appeals to me.

That said, often a phone is better than just the specs on paper and you dont know until you try it.

I got lucky and pre-ordered my must have Nexus 6 via the Motorola store. Its so close to my idea of a perfect Smartphone it's nearly unbelievable.

What's a Smartphone addict to do...

IMO the only reason the Note 6 gets dibs is if a person insists on having the newest OS as soon as possible and mod centric. I find the device more a priority over a newer shinier OS and the Note 4 already has the ability to shut all the bloat and bling (IMO) sensors off. Wiz is fine, but can be replaced with other UI if wanted.

The only thing I am missing is card writes and not missing them on my phone like I thought I would. I would on my tablet, but my Note 2014 is on 4.3 and will stay there until L is released and IF has card writes.

Besides update advantages, all I see are disadvantages compared to the N4:

No Sd slot

Inferior display

Inferior camera

Fix battery

Bigger

Not seeing the allure unless obsessed with the fastest up updates and for modders.

The argument in favor of the Nexus 6 is simple and straightforward.

We all have different needs priorities and workflows or personal patterns we use our smartphones for.

In my case if I'm being honest I'd be very happy if it came without a camera. Forty smartphones over the years and I've never used the camera because my preference and practice is to use a small ergonomically comfortable Nikon digital that goes everywhere with me. Obviously I'm in the greater minority but that's an example.

Next is the fact that the six inch display is a huge advantage for my needs and preferences. My workflow involves spending lots of time with desktop versions of web sites which are much easier to view on a large display.

I have large hands which makes this phone very comfortable to hold.

I happen to be very happy with Android 4.4.4.therefore once again Android 5.0 is far from a must have for me.

Battery life is never a deal breaker for me, even though my phone sees heavy usage, always carrying a compact and light bag for my MacBook Air I tuck in a small Anker external 12,000 mAh battery that makes topping up my phone or iPad very fast and easy.

Everything I've read suggests it'll have similar if not the very same display technology as the stellar Note 3 / 4 models.

I have no use for an SD card so that's not an issue.

Therefore for my needs the Nexus 6 is just ideal, it's the phone I've waited years for.

So there you have it, Nexus 6, my ideal smartphone and a wonderful example of the power of Android and the choices we have amongst the various handset makers.

Alrighty then. Add people with big meaty paws who want even mo' display space :)

Please keep in mind the nav bar on the Nexus takes up space, so actually a smaller display than the Note 4 when using apps. Immersive mode helps, but not an absolute offset and problematic for some app use. The bar goes away for video, but that is about it. Defeats the premise of your main reason, if the nav bar does not go away. Hopefully it does :)

I'm glad you brought up the topic of the nav bar.

The thought occurred to me that either there's some confusion about it in the Android community in general or it's me... Ha! (likely the latter :))

I've read others who've said that same thing about it obscuring display space. Yet when I compare my S5 without a nav bar to my N5 with one, there's no difference, since after use, the nav bar retracts completely and doesn't show up.

Am i missing something?

Another question...
Why suddenly when I type am i getting lowercase i's instead of uppercase like previously ?

I used to be in the camp that says "no SD card slot,no sale". That was until I found the Meenovo micro SD card reader. Investigate it because I find it a better option than to have to dig into the back of the phone to swap out SD cards. It has a pretty durable and secure silicone key holder too. I'm one that ALWAYS keeps my keys on me and they will go everywhere my phone goes. So how is that not a better idea than having it built in. It offers you more flexibility. When I realized this, I became pretty sure I wanted a Nexus 6.

Recently though I read an early opinion of the Nexus 6 saying the display was just a hair dimmer than the one on the new Moto X which I have heard isn't impressive. Coming from the S3, this would be a real deal breaker. Older Samsung Amoled like mine is notoriously dim. However, with Samsung's newer panels they seem to be the only amoleds that have solved the brightness problem traditionally associated with these panels. The Note 4 has the brightest and best display out there by many accounts. That's a big WIN for me and has nearly convinced me to get a Note 4. I hate using navigation in my car and not being able to see the screen in the bright sunlight.

Given the minimal differences in screen sizes, the added Note 4 functionality (that I may or may not use but its nice to have) tips the scales to Note 4 also. Thee ability to have 128gig meenova combined with a 32gig N4 with a 128gig SD card kind of blows my mind!
I never understood the update argument. If you like your phone when you buy it you'll still like it when you don't get the latest updates. Its still going to work for you. As for touchwiz lag,how fast does it have to be so long as it gets the job done. This doesn't bother me though I could use a custom launcher if I wanted.

The one big question though is the speaker. However, I've recently found a clever way of mounting my S3 on the dash where its close enough to reflect the sound back amplifying it significantly. Before finding this out I used a small Bluetooth canister speaker which worked great. I'm thinking loudness might not be an issue with these workarounds so the Note 4 might be my next phone.

Some apps work fine with nav bar hide mode and others do not. I eliminate the subjectivity with a Samsung due to the buttons :)

The "i" issue though seems odd, but I had a similar event with spell correction once.

MUCH better than nothing, but that increases port damage potential. It does not take much force at all to create a lever arm that can break the port. Also one more thing to keep track of since can not practical to leave plugged in. Still, much better than nothing :)

I have a few of the little micro usb plug-ins that have the card slot built in. Use for my Note 2014 since getting the card out of the Note 2014 slot is an awkward pain.

Bingo!

Exactly what I think of Nexus, its for those who want fast updates (which generally come with a ton of bugs), be treated as Beta testers and want to mod.

If one wants a fully functional Android phablet with MicroSD, an incredible Camera, Multi Window Multitasking and other software that takes advantage of the huge display and its res. then rather go with the Note 4. The SPen is proving to be very useful.

I was actually thinking about going with a note 3 if they come down in price. Then I heard that the Verizon version has issues currently with its radios relating to a recent software update. I'm not going to get one and the hope it gets fixed though. Also if you don't have connectivity your expensive phone is just a brick. This alone would make the extra expense of the 4 over the 3 well worth it. That's also why I choose to stay with the carrier having the most consistent coverage despite the cost.

Something else holding my decision back is the fact everyone says Motorola has the best radios. Like coverage, staying connected from the phones end should be at the top of ones list in my opinion. Having the best radios on the best network sounds ideal to me. Though Ive had no issues with calls,Can anyone tell me if the radios have anything to do with a better gps lock. On cloudy days my s3 will lose gps lock often though it usually will find it again fairly quickly. Problem is usually its at the wrong time. The actual spoken message from Google Nav is "GPS signal lost". Would I get more consistency with a Motorola unit over Samsung or is all cell phone gps the same?

My N4 appears to have as good reception as the DNA and iPhone. It has taken this long for me to discover this. Definitely WAY better than the N3 after the radio updates borked it.

Choosing between Notes 3, 4 or Nexus 6 is tough and rather premature since we can't try out the Nexus yet.

I couldn't resist buying a Note 4 to compare the excellent Note 3 I've enjoyed for the last year. Between those two, unless you prefer the feature set of the Note 4 the Note 3 is unbeatable in my opinion.

The Note 4 has nothing that compels me to choose it over my Note 3. I actually greatly prefer my Note 3 by a wide margin. So I'll give the N4 to a family member.

Next up for evaluation... Nexus 6.

Note 3 still rocks, provided not with Verizon since they truly screwed the radio up with the last updates.

I didn't want to wait any longer, for more info on where and when they would allow me to spend my money on the NexSix 64GB.
Just ordered two unlocked black Note 4s (32 GB) with octa cores and 64GB sd cards. Sans contract. :p
