So I have friends waiting on this phone. Problem is they will pass due to no IP67 rating. #fail #samdung Since they have no real advantage anyhow, I'm happy with my M8.

M8 is a fine device and just released this year. Why bother anyway? Most Note 3 owners will probably not bother either- and perhaps wisely so. That said, the Note 4 will be a FINE upgrade device or someone looking for a Note device. Just IMO not worth buying full price for if already have a Note 3.

Unlimited data for me, so full price only.

Wow, no IP67 - that was one of the biggest selling points to the N4 for me.... disappointing.

How could something that never existed have ever been a selling point for a phone that was just officially announced?

I agree, and as a Note 3 owner, this should be perfectly fine.

Overall I'm suitably impressed with the Note 4. Samsung had done a good job of adding features while not changing what was good about the Note 3.

In addition it's made me appreciate my much loved Note 3, just that much more. After approx one year mine still looks like new, and it's cosmetically perfect.

By far one of my favorites I'm going to continue to enjoy it for one more year.

It was supposed to have the same rating as the S5 for water/dust. Sounds like it doesn't, which the obvious point I was making is that the leaked info/rumors all basically said it would likely be rated the same as the S5. I'm not nearly the only prospective buyer disappointed in what sounds like a lack of the better water/dust proofing.

Agreed.

It was supposed to? Says who? Some useless tech blog predictions?

A lot of people, unfortunately, take rumors/predictions a lot more seriously than they should.

No one leaked anything about the N4 having IP67.

Part of the reason the S5 is a little bigger than the S4 is the IP67 coverage. The Note 4 is already a little bigger due to the extra sensor bling. IP67 would probably have made the device even bigger.

I think Samsung is in for a bad surprise with sales. iPhone 6 5.5", strong G3 sales and the Note 3 frankly still matches up well. Would not be surprised to see contract specials a lot sooner than normal. JMO.

I do think it will be interesting to see how Samsung performs when it comes to sales, given the fact that smartphones in general have matured to the point of not lacking any significant must have features.

In terms of styling Samsung chose to play it safe a choice that could impact sales either positively or negatively depending on consumers preferences. Ironically Apple's procrastination and refusal to migrate to larger displays, puts them in a strong position now as they finally cave in to consumer demand.

That plus their always brilliant cost is no object marketing program should ensure their normal level of hype driven demand. Between the well oiled marketing and their cult like following, Apples most certainly going to sell a mind boggling number of iPhones.

Yea, Apple will outperform everyone. That's a given.

I do agree with zipred for the reasonhe gives about smartphones having matured to the point that the ones being "upgraded" aren't lacking in any significant way compared to the new ones being launched.

This phone is going to look like a raw deal compared to last gen flagships with impressive specs (like the G2, Note 3), especially after LG and maybe even Samsung back ports a lot of the features from their latest flagships to the last ones.

A G2 with the G3's Software occupies a completely different tier of consideration than with the old software, to me, for example.

And I'm actually glad it's becoming like this. I think at this point OEMs need to stop focusing on spec bumps (which come with every update... it's so boring) and start focusing on polish, services, support, etc.

I suppose it was just my (and many others) imagination that this phone was said (in more than one article) to probably/likely include IP67. Really, what point are you making that is noteworthy besides just wanting to nitpick?? It is quite simple - myself and many others have read different spec pre-release pieces saying it was expected (of course not guaranteed) for IP67 to be included as it is on the S5. Thus many of us are disappointed it isn't. And maybe YOU don't care it isn't, but I do (along with many others). I use my phone in many conditions where the extra waterproof protection could be the difference between a brick and a working phone.

I don't care about the waterproof ratings, I quite like the Note 4 and will probably be getting one.

From a hardware and performance perspective it ticks a lot of boxes for me, I really want to get hold of the new Exynos version using the new ARM CPU/GPU architecture.

Not really fussed on Snapdragon 805, it's good but it's not great.

Yes, it was just your imagination.

Someone imagined it and told you, then you imagined it was true.

I don't see "many" people disappointed in that. I'm sure there are more than just you, since I've seen a few mention it, but most people just don't care that much about it. They've been getting by just fine with their phones for over half a decade and don't feel the need to dunk it in a pool or use it during a thunderstorm just cause they can.

"Pre-Release Pieces" in this case are rumors, and rumors are false by default until proven otherwise. There was no reliable and trustworthy source that said this phone was coming with Waterproofing. There were even complete mockups of devices rumored to be this phone, which looked completely different, and there are people complaining because that isn't the phone Samsung released on some tech blog comment threads, Lol.

Rumors should not set expectations, it only guarantees disappointment.

IMO, of course.

Note 3 = cheap plastic. Note 4 = machined aluminum. That alone is worth the upgrade. The Note 3 is no where near the device the N4 is. Not even close.

I'll just say I don't agree with several things you are saying or how you are presenting them and leave it at that. It's ok to agree to disagree.

I don't expect any rumors or leaks to be correct leading up to an announcement. I've seen too many that were wrong to believe any at this point.

Note 3: Cheap Plastic

Note 4: Cheap Plastic with a Machined Aluminum RIM

Impressive... Not really.

The camera will likely be impressive compared to the Note 3, especially the FFC. That may be "alone, worth the upgrade" to a lot of people.

The screen resolution may be, but at 386 PPI the Note 3 is already well above "Retina Range" and won't even be far behind the 4.7" iPhone 6 when it launches.

The hardware in the N3 is really good. It's a S800 device not an S600 like the Galaxy S4 was. This is only a huge upgrade in:

1. Screen Resolution
2. Camera Quality (N3 likely to see some improvements in FW Update, but will never match up to the OIS Unit in the N4)
3. Software (Most improvements, likely to be Back-Ported to the Note 3)

Basically, the Note 4 is to the Note 3 what the HTC One M8 is to the HTC One M7. A lot of those users didn't see a reason to upgrade, because a lot of the hardware improvements weren't worth the cost when their phone was already performing exceptionally well, and what software improvements were made, were/are being back ported to their device, anyways...

An Aluminum rim on the phone... That's not worth upgrading. I can wait for the FW update ;-)

Can't afford the Note 4??

I like plastic myself. More forgiving for drops.

Seems perspective is relative to own. If could buy either at same price I agree the N4 is best option.

Not seeing the difference as emphatic as you, but value is in the mind of the beholder. :)

I guess my opinion is influenced by my experience with the Note 3. I picked up a black one when it became available on at&t. I took it back after one week because of the poorly constructed home button. It was too loose for a brand new phone. During the week that I used it I noticed the chrome ring around the screen was made of a very cheap plastic and the chrome was easily chipped. I got a white LG G2 instead and loved that phone.

All my phones always sport a slim case anyway, so for me the actual aesthetics of the sides and back are not very important. Even the shape of almost every smartphone is pretty much the same - a rectangle with slightly rounded sides/edges. There really isn't much "flair" (office space haha) like that stuff that is that much different with phones. Look at almost every iPhone - usually wrapped in a hideously large, ugly case (iphones break easy) - so who cares much what the phone looks like out of the case. (I think iphones are boring looking fyi). I care about display qualiy/brightness, button quality, earpiece and speaker quality, radio quality, good camera quality and of course battery life and snappiness of the phone. And internal storage with the ability to add an sd card. Those things are what matter - I will choose a slim case that will look nice enough, but covers up most of the phone anyway.

Must have been an off build. I like the N3 design overall. IMO, it is the best overall device that exists today (that you can buy). It is a phablet, so is as close to a true all-in-one as device as one can practically get.

A person could get away with just the N3 and not feel compelled to haul a tablet too on trips.

"Sadly", I had already paid full price for the S4, and had no desire to blow even more money upgrading after a few months to the N3. I would have got the N3 though if did not already have the S4.

Added:

Were it not for its vampire of a display, the G3 would be right up there too. The display size still make the N3 tops though as far as an all-in-one (phone and tablet). Even if the G3 did not have a vampire display.
