Root Notification bar

MrMike

Newbie
After much deliberation I decided to gets Nexus One! Had it about a week and loving it. The only problem is the white notification bar. I love the aesthetics but scared of burn in. I know you have to be rooted in order to change it and I was thinking of using this......

[APP] [ROOT] 1-click root for N1 - xda-developers

I'm not ready to start messing with ROMs just yet (probably in the future), so just a simple question, is it possible to change the notification bar and text/icon colours without flashing a while ROM?

I'm new to all this and XDA is a nightmare to find anything when you're unsure what you are looking for. Any help is greatly appreciated.

unless you have your device with the screen on for long periods of time, i wouldnt worry about screen burning in

Really? I've read loads of complaints about it. Plus, as it's new it is on pretty much all the time ;)

Get launcherpro and you can auto-hide the notification bar. Plus it's a way better launcher!

I'm using Launcher Pro, but I like having the notification bar there. Am I being too picky?

My nexus one is setup so that the screen stays on during charging....There have been times when the screen is on all night. I've had that particular phone for 5 months (switched to ATT version last month) and never noticed any burn-in. Only when someone mentioned problems did I look for it and was barely able to see burn-in, and then only when the screen was completely white like in the web browser or something.

Although I've read others posting about how they can see individual shapes of the notifications in the bar burn-in with minimal use where they make sure to turn the screen off immediately. Who knows.

i looked to see if i have some burnin and it looks like i do... i wish i cared but i think i'm over the obsessive nature of electronics...

As it's new, I'm being obsessive, completely. I really don't want the burn in, it would annoy the hell out of me.

OP, no, you can't change the notification bar color without changing the ROM. I think what you are looking for is something deodexed but as close to stock as possible. If so, check out this awesome ROM by Geo411m. I use it on my wife's N1 since all she wanted was the black bar as well.

[ROM] FRF91 Stock, Deodexed, rooted, busybox, battery %, TB alert/wake/unlock 8/4/10

Awesome thanks! So, using the "one click root" will work then follow a guide to flash the ROM you linked me to?

It sounds like what I want, I want as close to stock as possible but a black notification bar.

More n00b questions. Is there an "idiot proof" guide to flashing ROMs? I have found a few but some detials seem to differ, and with no verification from my own knowledge I'm a little wary to try them.

Yea, go ahead and use the one click method. Go to the marketplace and download ROM Manager and flash clockwork recovery. Once you have that custom recovery set up, then just toss the zipped and signed ROM into your SD card. You can either flash through ROM Manager or If you do it through recovery, you'll want to do a nandroid backup first, wipe, flash, reboot and enjoy.

If you still haven't decided yet...

LauncherPro has a swiping gesture, so if you swipe up on the dock bar, it'll hide/show the notification bar. That should minimize your burn in while also having the notification bar as you need it.

Well, thanks to the advice in here I flashed lasst night. What an easy process! Going to check out Cyanogen and MoDaCos ROMS now.

you can always just install a stock ROM that is deodexed which means you can theme it. i use an all black status bar. i have the slight burn in, but its actually gone away over time using the black bar, or hiding the bar with launcher pro.

or use modaco ROM which is stock, or cyanogen.

In the car when I'm streaming music I like to look over and see what's playing without having to unlock the phone or whatever. Also, I have the wifi sleep issue so at home when I'm streaming music over wifi, as soon as the screen sleeps, that's it.....so I have to keep the screen on. Screen burns power so I just set it to not sleep when plugged in. I suppose I could change it back when I'm not playing music, but I don't.

Check out Enomther as well. He has a modified, but very close to stock that you can add a skin mod to make it look like dozens of themes that he has created. His ROM will also allow overclocking built-in to the ROM, plus access to download the HTC 720p Camera app which is much better than stock.

+1 on Enomther's ROM. You can check out my latest post in the Show Your Homescreen thread for pics on my mods and links to them as well.

Thanks for that. I tried flashing it, but it aborted. Here is the end of the log...

If anyone could help it would be appreciated.

Mike, I had the same problem. My N1 would get stuck in a boot up loop with the Manup Theme. Try the regular release. It should be right next to the manup theme. After you install that, look for a mod that you like and install it from recovery (or ROM manager). It will keep any data you have and skin the ROM the way you like it.
