Notification Charm - HTC Rhyme

Unforgiven

OK, I asked this in the HTC Rhyme forum, but it seems to make sense to not be in that forum and I hope this is the right place for it (or at least a good place).

For those not familiar with the HTC Rhyme, it comes with a Charm dongle that connects through the headphone jack, clips to her purse strap, and lights up when she gets a phone call, email, text message, etc. So when she has something on her phone to respond to and it is buried in the bottom of her purse, she can see the notification and follow the wire clipped to her purse strap back to her phone. She loves it.

The thread I originally responded to was for someone that purchased an aftermarket charm but found that they only work with HTC Sense 3.5. Since there are aftermarket charms out there, but limited phones that they work with, I figured there must be a solution. I thought of LightFlow, an app that I only discovered after getting my GNex that controls LEDs (see below for link to original thread, which has a link to LightFlow app review.

I have reached out to the developer and he expressed interest. I have sent him some hardware information from my wife's phone just a short time ago.

I thought opening this up to a broader Android audience, myself and the developer could determine if there was enough user interest for it to be pursued. I know that my wife wanted the HTC rhyme primarily because of the charm (she had an OG Droid for prior so she wanted another android phone already). I just figured I would try and see how big the audience for this functionality would be for Moto, Sammy, non 3.5 HTC Sense, Sony, LG users to be able to have something like this as an option for their wives or themselves.

Mods, if I am in the wrong spot, please let me know...

Great idea!!

I'm sure if my wife could get onre of those for her Hero (my old hero ;) ) she'd love it!!

This would be a great thing to develop and distribute. I'd say persue this with the dev and see where it goes.

I am pursuing it with a dev who already has a great app for controlling LEDs.

While I am not affiliated with the dev in any way, I purchased his app, had an issue, and received great support, so in my own way, I'm trying to thank him by opening up more customers for him through this community...;)

Edit: I misread you're reply. I read it as "pursue with a developer" and you actually wrote "pursue with the developer. I'm sorry!!!! Anyway, this is exactly the kind of feedback I'm looking for. I'm not an Android developer so I have no idea how difficult this is. If it is a huge challenge I think it would be important for the dev to know if it is worth his time.

I would love this. I work all day and am on my feet and always running around the store and most of the time leave my phone in my office, so if there was a way to get a wireless one, bluetooth maybe? and have it clip to my shirt and wristband or something that would be awesome.

I'd test with a purse. :D

You're killing me, LOL. Although I hadn't thought about Granite1's suggestion, salespeople, Realtor, insurance adjusters, or other professionals that do work in the field and may have their phone in a bag or something similar.

That's what I love about these forums, so many different perspectives.:D

Does the Rhyme's charm flash different colors for different notifications? i.e. missed call, text message, email...

Not very familiar with this device or the charm.

I think so. I confirm with my wife tomorrow. This was obviously developed as a "chick" phone (I'm not being sexist, the phone is pink and promotes the "purse" charm). BTW, I have an MBA and the wife earns more than me :o

Anyway, Lightflow specializes in specific LED notification for different apps and this isn't about HTC Rhyme Charm dongle, it is about third party dongles and LightFlow being able to activate said dongle.

I would imagine any three color led (I think that is what is required to make any color) attached to a dongle that interfaces through the headphone jack would be able to display any color if the dev is able to make his base app work. Right now I think on my Gnex LED I have at least 8 different color notifications (the number of notifications I have configured, not an app limit).

I think the challenge for the dev will be accessing and activating the dongle LED. The app is already able to manipulate colors based on what type of notification comes in.

Please correct me if I am wrong.

I thought the phone was purple? :p

I confirmed that it is a multicolored notification with the charm. What I don't know is what is available for aftermarket dongles.

That is the question. If we could get multicolored ones for different notifications then we would be in business.

I talked with the developer again, it is recognized as a hardware device on the Rhyme. I tried it on my GNex and it was not recognized. He suggested that it may be a kernal mod, but I think maybe someone familiar with sense could help figure out how to get it recognized.
