Notification help

I have been trying to change the notifications for receiving a test message and I can't get it to change. The download isn't even in the notification area of my phone. Can anyone help me do this? I have the AT&T captivate
 
Welcome to the Android Forums!

So you go into the text messaging client, go to options, and set a notification ringtone and it won't stick. Is this correct?
