Help Notification Issues

Cush1978

Lurker
Hello, I have a Verizon Galaxy S3 and if it matters, I'm running CleanROM 4.5 on it. The question is probably unrelated to the ROM, but I include that information for the sake of completeness.

I have some issues regarding how to control notifications. In general, I would like my phone to vibrate when I receive an email (Email/Gmail), a phone call, or an SMS. So I go into those individual apps and indicate that I want their notifications to vibrate.

However, when I cycle through my sound settings (Silent/Mute (Vibrate Only)/Sound On/Sound And Vibrate) in the QuickPanel, it doesn't apply to the apps (Email and GMail). I would think a master sound setting would override the apps, but I guess not. Is there a way to GLOBALLY control whether the phone vibrates or not, and when it does, only in the apps I want vibrations from at all?

At night, I use my phone as a bedside clock. When I'm sleeping, I want to turn off vibrate and ALL sounds except the ringer for calls. The only way I can do that is by going into settings and turning down everything except the ringer volume.

In short, I'm looking for an easy way to switch between "modes" on the phone. I've run LiquidSmooth which is AOSP-based and it has the notion of profiles. I haven't seen an equivalent in TouchWiz. The need seems basic I need:

- Global Vibrate On (for apps I want vibrate from)/Off
- Ringer Only

I don't have the same issue with sound; I can mute with ease and it works as expected. I'm just looking to easily switch between desired modes when I'm asleep (ringer only), at home (sound/vibrate), at work (silent or sound only), or carrying the phone around in my pocket (vibrate). I just can't seem to get it straight.

Does anyone use third-party apps to achieve this, or can this be done in Samsung's stock ROM and something's bugged with CleanROM?

Thanks and sorry for the lengthy post. Seems like such a simple problem.

Hmm if I've understood you properly what you may need to do is go into settings and disable system/ default notifications as this overrides any individual app settings. However if your phone is still vibrating when you set the profile to mute there is an issue there somewhere possibly ROM related, I don't know the answer to that one.
As for profile switching etc an app called tasker can do all that for you, or if you just want something simple blocking mode on the phone will shut off all notifications apart from the exceptions you give it.

If I'm reading your response correctly, we might have things backwards. I'll give a thorough example.

I want my phone to vibrate when I receive an email via Gmail, so in the Gmail app, I set it to vibrate in the notification settings.

In my phone's QuickPanel, I set Sound to "Sound and Vibrate." When a Gmail comes in, my phone vibrates. This is expected behavior.

Now I'm at work and my phone is sitting on my desk and I don't want my phone buzzing all the time. In my phone's QuickPanel, I set Sound to "Sound Only." When a Gmail comes in, my phone still vibrates. This is NOT expected behavior. In order to stop Gmail from causing vibrations, I have to turn it off in Gmail.

So what I want is my "global" sound/vibrate setting to override individual app settings.

Vibrations should only occur IF App is set to vibrate AND Phone is set to vibrate.

Tasker looks like a good application. It just seems to me that this is a simple setting and if it's something flaky with the ROM, I need to report it or go back to stock. If it's something stupid I'm doing, I guess I need to know.

I find it odd that I can toggle Sound/Vibrate settings in the QuickPanel AND the Sound area of Settings also has a check box for "Sound And Vibration."

Ideally, I'd like a widget to quickly change between modes/profiles/whatever they're called. Maybe Tasker is the way to go for that. I just want to make sure there's nothing odd with my phone or if I've just missed some critical setting I need to tweak.

i am having a sound issue as well. my email app...not gmail...will not auto sync my emails, and when i do a manual sync, it will not make any sound for me to let me know an email has arrived. when i went into the email app, and opened the settings, the "device sound" tab was all grayed out. how do i fix this? i have an S3, and Jelly Bean.
thanks
