Root Notification led question

Ever since 2.1, the notification led was disabled when the screen is on. Is there any sort of modification I can do or something to get it enabled again? Whenever my phone is on silent and I'm watching a video or doing anything else that takes up the whole screen, I'm not aware of messages or anything until much later and many times this has been a major inconvenience.

I'm running 2.2 in case it makes a difference.

my led works fine and on 2.2 also. have you tried an aftermarket led program that allows you to chasnge the led color? other than that I dont know
