Help Notification popups

Hi I'm new to Galaxy S3. Have a couple of questions regarding notification popups.

1. When S3 is locked and in my pocket, whenever I get an SMS/whatsapp, although there is a notification sound, the popup does not show on screen. When the phone is out of my pocket, the popup appears. I don't want to manually unlock my phone whenever I receive a message while the phone is in my pocket

2. How do I extend the duration of an SMS/whatsapp notification popup, so that I have time to look at it before the screen becomes locked again?

I also have that problem before but after i updated my OS Jelly bean 4.1 it disappeared and now working great. Try updating your OS or uninstalled and installed the newest version of the Whatsapp application.

My android phone's version is 4.1.1, and I just recently installed whatsapp.
