Notification ringtone problem

I just bought a Samsung Galaxy and can't get the notification ring tone to sound when a text message comes in. When I go to Settings > Sound settings> Notification ringtone, I can hear all the ringtones in the test mode. When I select one, click okay and receive a text there is no sound. It's silent.

Can anyone help me with this?

Are notifications enabled in the SMS app? If you open the app, hit menu, settings, notifications are notifications on?

Which Galaxy is it? There are several in the Galaxy range.
