Help Notification Silence

I'm having a very strange problem with notifications on my Razr Maxx. In the last week or two, notifications have just stopped sounding. I've read posts in a number of fora that discuss total speaker failure; but that's not my problem. Media still sounds through the speaker. Ringtones still sound through the speaker. If I go to set a notification tone, either on the phone or in an app, I hear the tone. But get something that should trigger a notification, like a text message or an e-mail, I get nothing.

Is anyone familiar with this problem and can suggest a solution?

I use a similar product called Slider Widget - Volumes. All the volumes have been up full when I've run my tests. But thanks for weighing in. This only started within the last two weeks; but I can't think of anything I've installed in that time that would cause just the notifications to go out to lunch.
 
Android ver 4.0.4. I usually try not to invoke the nuclear option. Bad things usually result from that.
 
a Factory reset should not cause any problems especially if your not updating your OS. But it may reset any caches etc that may be interfering with phone operation. If you have upgraded your OS from original it is always recommended to do a factory reset afterwards.
 
I, too, had the external speaker issue with my Razr Maxx. I didn't realize I was missing calls, texts or emails at first. It did become quite a problem. I could get it working again by tapping just under the speaker but then that stopped. I then had to do the push and rub on the speaker. Verizon did replace my phone this week. I am upset though. I had Jellybean on my other phone and am back to ICS with this one. I miss Google Now.

You must be rooted, matterri. My phone says I'm updated while I'm running 4.0.4. It seems, razrclive, that no matter what precautions I take to back up everything (I use MyBackup Pro) invariably something critical gets lost in an FDR. On top of that, it seems to be the VZW techs' first answer to everything: Don't bother trying to find out what the problem is; just do an FDR and torch the customer's setup. But as I write this I'm backing up all my apps, all my videos, all my pictures, all my data, everything MBP says it can back up, and I'm hoping it will all be there once I push the button. But before that, I'm going to try clearing cache first. For one thing, MBP just FC'd twice on me while I was writing this.
 
FYI: Clearing cache did nothing, as I expected. FDRing the phone damn near bricked it, as I feared -- and it did nothing to solve the silent notification problem. Nothing good comes from an FDR. Nothing. Not one thing. Not only did it not solve my silent notification problem, but, as I feared, it left me without numerous apps and much data, DESPITE backing it ALL up before frobbing the nuke switch. NOTHING good comes from an FDR. NOTHING.
 
Congratulations. YMMV, as they say. My mileage is zero. I'll say it again: Avoid an FDR at all costs. And I still don't know what's causing my problem with the silent notifications. I may have to throw myself on the mercy of my favorite rep at the local VZW store.
 
OK, I still don't know why I lost the volume on notifications. But I have recently learned one thing about my phone: Under native system settings (menu>system settings>sound) is a selection for volumes. It separates notification volumes from ringtones -- and my notification volume was at zero while my ringtone volume was full throttle. I can't say I've seen any aftermarket volume control that separates ring volume from notification volume; so I had no idea that the basic phone considered them separate entities. And for some strange reason, something on my phone is still intermittently zeroing my notifications. The strange thing is that I found this when I got upgraded to JB -- and all my ringtones went out to lunch. That's the subject of another thread. Someone on that other thread suggested the dreaded FDR for the missing ringtone problem; like it affected the ringtones and notifications before. I've never had to FDR a phone after an OS update. But I digress.

yup. i just updated to JB last week and for some reason, the update knocked my notifications volume all the way down to zero, but not any of my other volumes. so i'd hear incoming phone calls but not texts/emails/etc. i bumped up the notification volume and it's been fine ever since, but i'm just staying aware of the issue.
 
I've been following this thread because I was experiencing the same issue with my RAZR MAXX. I even got a widget that displayed my notification settings right on my home screen so I could easily check it from time to time. Then, last night, I noticed a small notification pop up that said "Notifications Silenced Indefinitely". It looked just like the message when I turn my volume down and set SHUSH! to turn it back on at a certain time. So, I opened the app from the app drawer and there was an item under customize that said "Notifications Off". I switched that to "Notifications On" and have not had any trouble all day (I normally have to turn it back on at least once an hour). I don't think I've ever opened the app since I set it up right after getting the phone so I'm guessing an update changed the default setting.
Of course, if you don't have SHUSH! this probably won't work and I'm sorry. I know how very frustrating it is.
