Notification - the little numbers on the app shortcuts

I have three email apps on my phone: samsung's email app, gmail, and yahoo. I have set up about four pages of apps and widgets that I use regularly. The remainder of my apps are under the "Apps" tab/folder.

I get notifications about yahoo mail and gmail in the notification bar at the top of the phone. BUT, when an email is waiting to be read on the Samsung app (which is connected to my gmail account), I get a notice at the top, but I also see a little number "1" or "4" or "3" depending on how many unread emails are there. The number appears in a red circle on the app shortcut. That's just like an iphone, and I get it.

What i don't get is why neither the yahoo app, nor the gmail app do the same thing?

this happens with FB as well - I get notices in the notice bar, but no little notification on the app itself.

(I wish I knew what that little numeric notice is called)

Does anyone know if this is a settings issue? I can't find a setting that would address this, and I was curious if i could fix it, as I'd like to know if emails are waiting for me at a glance.

thank you!

The little red dots are called badges and are only available on the stock built in apps on the S4 using Touchwiz.
If you load another launchers such as Apex, you can choose which app the badges appear on for the different functions such as messenger, phone, internet, facebook, etc. But as far as I know all launchers only allow you to choose a single app to display the badge on for each function. Having each email app show its own badge is a no-go.
