Notifications issue

Running Android 10 and Norton 360 both up to date. Some apps sporadically show high figures of notifications I.e. outlook could show 256, WhatsApp 60 etc. Clicking on app will show that these were incorrect. I have uninstalled and reinstalled some of the problem apps but as mentioned above it is sporadic.

Ditch Norton 360, it's a memory hog and gives you a lot of false positives, along with showing you apps with sporadically high notifications.
Norton 360 interprets everything as a threat, including notifications.
Outlook is your email app, and runs continuously in the background, which is totally normal, and that is why you're gonna see notifications constantly.
It's working normally, there's no need to over think these things.
I also have Norton 360 but only on my computer and laptop.
Android doesn't really need it, TBH...

Brilliant. your answer got me reading last night, learnt about play store protect etc, seems Anti virus software are non essential. cheers for your quick response.
