Help Notifications not working

My e-mail notification is not working. It used to work great - I'd get a notification icon in the top bar when a new email came in. Now, nothing. I thought I had no new emails but sure enough I clicked my gmail app, re-loaded and there were a few new ones. I have sync turned on, and the notification turned on....so I'm not sure what is happening. Any ideas?

Also, I noticed that since I started using Nova Launcher, I don't get a little notification "1" when I have a new text message (in the bottom text message icon). I used to get this before.

I should also add that my notifications for everything else are working fine, it's just the e-mail one.

I unchecked sync, notification and then re-checked them and now it works. Guess it just needed to be re-set.
