Notifications not working

Hello, I got my first Android phone in may, a Samsung Galaxy S4.
It has been fine up until a week ago, for the last week I have noticed that if my phone is on my desk or in my pocket/bag etc then I will not get any notifications at all for anything, so nothing at all when I get a text, email, phone call, voicemail, facebook message etc.
But, if I pick the phone up and activate the screen then I will get around 20 plus notifications all at once. So basically I have to be looking at my phone for me to know somebody has contacted me.
I have missed so many calls etc this past week.
I have not changed anything settings wise since May and like I said the phone has been totally fine, then a week ago this just randomly started happening.
I factory reset the phone and it did not help.
Does anyone have any ideas on how to fix this please?
