notifications

I just set up a new Moto X Pure with android 6 and I do not get notifications flags on my icons, in apps like messaging or whatsapp. On my previous Samsung S4 running 5.01 I would see a yellow flag '3' if I had 3 new messages e.g. I looked in all teh settings but could not find it. Since messaging, whatsapp and gmail are all affected I suspect this is not an app setting but something in android not set up correctly or defective. Any ideas?

I think you only get notifications in status bar and on lock screen if you have Moto Display set up. A little different than how Samsung does it.

Thanks! In doing some more research I found that what I had before was a indeed a Samsung thing and not a core android feature... and I think I can get that feature with the Nova Prime launcher. My problem is the notification area is not a true reflection of the status - I can wipe the notification without having viewed the messages and there is no indication that there are messages waiting. Anyway, it's not a problem with my setup!
