Help Nougat: can Doze really be disabled? Otherwise push email won't work

Is still anybody investigating into the problem? I have struggled with same issues as described in OP, and the deviceidle disable seems to disable the heavy dose mode, so my mail client and background services are again responsible (not tested thoroughly but after almost day I didn't meet an app lockout).

I started using push on the default email app on Samsung, and tested several times. Doze does not disable email pushing on that app.

If you'r client is using GCM, then it's not the case. As many times mentioned in the thread, some mail clients don't use GCM so are affected .I'm trying to find out what features can I leave active and which not, to preserve all desired background apps alive.

With or without the always on screen? On my s7 edge, push never works with Doze if always on is disabled ; it sometimes works if it is enabled.

Also, I am still not aware of any client using high priority GCM (ordinary yes, high priority no), which would be the only ones that can wake up a phone from doze.

Typemail worked well for me on my previous phone (ZTE Zmax 6.0.1 Marshmallow) even when the phone was in doze mode. I got emails/notifications at work before anyone else did and we all got the same emails.

Oh. I never turned off AOD coz I like that feature. Maybe I'll do a test. I'm using the built in email client.

I have disabled both light and deep sleep at system level. Things looked responsive for some time but today after waking phone from airplane mode I've encountered mail client missed email by push channel. I'm using K-@ mail which is build on the same chasis as K9, so it uses normal priority notifications.

I'm still running Greenify and Amplify app which however didn't clash with email on lower Androids. The light and heavy hibernation is disabled in Greenify.

I need some kind of logging that would say something about why the clients don't receive events when they should and what exactly did limit them.

Ok. As tested, push works on the Samsung Email app perfectly with AOD on. AOD off for some reason stops it. But I like AOD, and I don't normally receive urgent emails....

@FrantaFerda , I think you're making some confusion. k9 mail is not server-based: the app connects to your email server directly, and that's it. Apps like TypeMail are different: the TypeMail server connects to your mail server, and, when there is new mail, sends a GCM notification to your phone. Doze is structured in such a way that only high-priority GCM notifications can wake up a phone from Doze. Whatsapp sends high-priority GCM; AFAIK there is no email client which sends high-priority GCMs. I contacted the TypeMail and NewtonMail teams, and they said they don't use high priority.
K-9 mail does not rely on GCM notifications at all.

@tube517 , it's very odd that an email client would work in doze, because doze is specifically meant to shut down network access. Are you sure the phone was in Doze? With Marshmallows, Doze only kicked in after the phone was stationary for ca. 60 minutes.

Yes. I have Greenify with Aggressive Doze enabled. This triggers Doze at 10min. To make sure, I waited 30min. Also This puts a Zzzz icon on the AOD once the phone is dozing.


The following tests were done:


AOD off with Email not whitelisted on Doze/Greenify - email did not go though.
AOD off with Email whitelisted - email did not go through
AOD on with Email not whitelisted - email did not go through.
AOD on with Email whitelisted - email went through.


Remember that the Samsung Email app is a system level app. It may have capabilities regarding system beyond those that third party apps can trigger. Email has been part of AOD notifications even before it allowed 3rd parties.

The only way to track that I know of is Greenify.








I'm using Gmail and Outlook.com as my email accounts. I think they're imap. There are push options in the settings of the accounts.




Edit: hmm. Seems I may have spoken too soon. There's a possibility this might only work if you have Greenify on Doze. The email doesn't always go through on time. There are times when it's late for a bit, up to 20min or so late, before I get an update. But it does go through the Doze. Right now I'm thinking it goes through during the 'light doze' phases but not during 'deep doze'.
