Nova Launcher - customize app permissions?

Hi guys,
I hate to start a new thread here, but I have spent a couple hours looking for a thread I read earlier in the week and I just can't find it.
I am reluctant to update Words With Friends as the permissions have gotten ridiculous.
Someone in a thread here in AF mentioned that there was a "hidden" mode or something that allowed users to pick and choose which permissions to grant apps(or that is how I interpreted it).
It was in Nova launcher, which i have since installed, but I can't find this anywhere.
so-
Am I crazy or does anyone else recall this thread- it may have been an older one.
If anyone knows what I am talking about could you share?
And if it is something that was temporarily available but now gone, that would help to know.
I recall some chatter about the developers not being in favor of this possibility.
Help?:o

My only guess is this would require root, and likely a custom ROM that supports it. Seeing some out there, they say they do allow for changing permissions per app.

Yes, generally root is need. But if your system is Android 4.3, there is a hidden permission controller provided by system.
Just search 'permission' in the market, and your will find some apps can do that.
