Help "Null" Hangouts Text Messages

Hey everyone! So I have a Nexus 5 on MetroPCS and love it! But I do have one issue: I use Hangouts for SMS, but every so often, I'll get a text message from someone with an iPhone that'll abruptly be cut off with the word "null." It usually occurs when the message is medium to long in length. As for my APN settings, I was using the T-Mobile one (in both Hangouts and in the phone's settings), but I tried switching my APN to the MetroPCS one a couple of days ago, and the issue SEEMS to have been resolved. Anyone have any ideas? Thank you!

Can I ask how do you know if it was a iPhone that sent the text. ..the text wont tell you that it was sent from iPhone .

Hmmmmm you changed the APN and it worked . doing this without edit to the APN I couldn't believe that .

Well, it's my girlfriend, whom I know for sure has an iPhone. And the only other person with whom I've had this problem also has an iPhone. It must have something to do with iMessage.

I had to ask that cause I always see a post that have problems with MMS or SMS is always with a iPhone . but I never seen it happen yet .

Now you say you changed the APN and it worked . who is your carrier and are you rooted . it could have been a APN issue . but I Dont want you to blame the forums if that change wipes out your pockets from over charging your account .

I have no idea what you are talking about.

You said you changed the APN . last time I checked APN can't be changed unless your rooted . if you altered the APN and it worked I asked what you edit may cost you if the phone is seen as if it was roaming .

I said in my first post that I have MetroPCS. But you can switch between the T-Mobile and MetroPCS APNs because they're under one company now. I am rooted.

So does anyone have a solution? Unfortunately, I got the message again today.

You can change the APN on a stock, unlocked Nexus (and most phones). I don't believe you can edit the APN but you can add new ones and then select to use the APN you added.

Since you actually have metropcs service as your provider, then your APN settings should be set to the "MetroPCS - (fast.metropcs.com)" selection and with IPV6 selected, as this will have the necessary and correct APN network settings for metropcs network. APN settings do affect the SMS delivery and receiving.
Metropcs is on the T-Mobile network since they merged and even using the T-Mobile GPRS ( fast.tmobile.com) normal data/LTE and so forth will/should work, but as you have experienced, you will have SMS issues.
Switching between the two or three pre-set APN settings - Metropcs - fast.metropcs/ T-Mobile - GRPS/ and the T-Mobile - fast.T-Mobile, will not cause or incur any additional charges on your account. I have tested them all and have also setup my own Metropcs - fast.metropcs APN setting without any I'll affects or additional charges.
Also in the /settings/NFC and more/mobile networks/ you can make sure that the"Data Enabled " is selected and "Preferred Network Type" is set to LTE and you can unselect "Data Roaming"

Wow, thanks so much for the extremely informative reply. I followed your advice, and I have not had any problems since then. Thank you so much! Exactly what I was looking for!

Hey theenextkb24 your welcome!
Glad I was able to help you out and resolve your issue
I've had APN issue's myself and it's no fun. ;)

I have a problem that may or may not be related. When my wife sends me a photograph from her iPhone, which I receive via Hangouts, a message is received but the photograph itself will not download whilst I am on wi-fi. The message advises me that the photo cannot be downloaded via wi-fi (for some reason) but that it can if I turn on cellular reception, which it then does.

No big problem, of course, but why?

I'm having this problem (texts abruptly cut off and end with "null"). It seems to only occur when the incoming messages are long and they include single quote characters. (escape character bug?) When i look at my access point names settings i only have one option: T-Mobile US (epc.tmobile.com).

Anyone know what I can try to fix this? Or if this is a known issue or bug for Apple or Google?

I've had the null issue happen with a woman using an iPhone as well. She was what I like to call a schizophrenic texter where depending on the day and time and location she is texting me from, it reads like a different person, everytime. As you can imagine, her use of characters and spelling would cover the full spectrum possible on a phone, including emoji.

I have gotten a text from her which prematurely ended in 'null' several times before AND after I switched over from Metro to T-Mobile. APN is set to fast.tmobile.com currently. doesn't happen with anyone else, I do have pushbullet connected for texting on the computer, and this issue seems to only happen with long texts.

Had this with the S3, I assume it's simply a case of the phone needs data enabled to receive MMS. I don't know why which is what you were actually asking though, sorry ha!
