Hear hear. It's something that has been bandied about here but nothing's been done about it. Typically the government panders to big business, the rich get richer and the poor get poorer.

Politicians suck and blow. Oh, hang on, that's harmonica players, I'm not supposed to get political outside of the political forum, am I. 
My reception is reasonable, but the connection sometimes slows down badly when there are lots of other people on. I know plenty of people who've done away with their landlines, I haven't had one for more than ten years now.

Good point. I have noticed that there are fewer and fewer 0800 numbers around already.
Are 0845 and the like numbers already covered by something? I thought the whole idea of them was that they're charged like regular calls to local landline numbers.

I'm not sure, but you can get an app that gives you a local number for pretty much any 0845 number as an alternative.

There are some sites with this sort of information, but on the few occassions I tried them, I didn't have much success. Maybe the app will work better

Otherwise, there is also the SAYNOTO0870 website, which is very good for alternative numbers usually. It's what I always use.
Ah! I just realized the app is inspired by that very same website. Nice!
Here in the UK 0800s used to be free on Orange. Then networks stopped competing for subscriber numbers as the market saturated and started using Average Revenue Per User as their main metric, and that was just one of the things that changed.
