Off brand budget tablets

I'm sure it's more down to where you buy an off-brand cheap tablet, more so than the devices themselves. If you're buying them from reputable sellers in your own country. There's usually consumer protection laws, to try and protect consumers from shoddy products. The UK has the Sale of Goods Act 1979, which states that goods sold in the United Kingdom must be of "Satisfactory quality" and be "Fit for purpose". This certainly does NOT happen in China, I can assure you.

When you're buying off-brand devices from Chinese wholesalers or on Ebay, it's caveat emptor(let the buyer beware). So if your el-cheapo whatever decides to brick itself, and the vendor refuses to honour warranty, hard luck. Or they say it's supposed to have certain function or feature and you find that it doesn't, again hard luck.
