Off brand question...

Having read the off brand phones and tablets post - - -

I was just given a tablet a friend bought in Beijing a couple of years ago. The brand is ELC. The website elcldc.com is mostly in chinese and makes no mention of the ELC model IP701 tablet.

Android 2.1 is on the tablet. It is useless to me unless I can use it to go through upgrading Android which I have never done.

I realize no one may know anything about this tablet.

I'm interested in learning about hardware requirements for the latest Android load.

Any good direction will be appreciated!

It takes more than just requirements. Android is not a one size fits all installation. It had to be specific for the device. For example, the Android installer used on a Galaxy Nexus will not work on a Nexus S. Another example would be the Android update installer for the T-Mobile Galaxy S3 will not work on the international version of the S3.

So off brand tablets are basically almost impossible to update.

This and the fact that since it is off brand a lot of developers really do not see a point to push out updates or even support the device, since they would rather focus on the more popular devices.

Personally you can try and wait until someone responds, but the fact of the matter is, the majority of us will not be able to offer assistance for that specific device, we will only be able to compare to other devices and hope that they are somewhat similar.

I feel your pain. Eclair sucks (android 2.1) and its so useless my first tablet (also an off brand) is a paperweight

You could have a look at a ROM called Uberoid. That's been developed to support some of these Chinese devices, that use common chipsets and reference designs.

All Uberoid Supported Tablet Models

No guarantees though, but if you were given some cheapo thing that came from Beijing a couple of years ago, there's nothing really to lose.

ELC is probably Shenzhen Electron Technology Co., Ltd.

Thanks for the replies. Internet has been off the last few days so I'm just getting a chance to follow up. Right now I have internet and electricity at the same time. It's a good day...
