OFFICIAL Android Feature Wishlist Thread

I don't know what's the problem Google has with SIM storage.

Because the very limited SIM storage space is completely inadequate for the requirements of a modern smart phone.

Since the beginning of time, mobile phones give you the option to store both your messages and your contacts to the SIM card, and to move them to/from the phone memory.

Yes the SIM card was introduced 20 years ago, phones have changed a lot since then, AFAIK SIM cards haven't.

Replying to my own post:

This is a China Telecom CDMA SIM.

'128K' is that kilobytes or kilobits? I assume that's the storage capacity. Whatever it is, I'm sure it's woefully inadequate for the amount of information I store about my contacts.

1: The ability to switch seamlessly and automatically between the regular network and wi-fi for making calls and sending texts. My office has almost no actual cell phone reception and I can neither call nor text, which is a bit annoying. I know there are free text apps that work over wi-fi but I don't want to ask every single person I know to program a second number for me into their phone.
2: This will never happen, but I'd love to see every Android device shipped with an "Administrator Privileges" toggle in settings. No more rooting required.
3: It'd also be nice to have the phone automatically switch to the mobile network if the wi-fi signal is poor (under a certain speed) or even use a simultanous combination of the mobile network and the wi-fi signal to attain the best possible connection no matter where you are. Not sure if that's possible, but it would be cool. As it is, my Inspire will ignore the mobile network entirely if it has even a hint of wi-fi connectivity, even when there's not enough to actually do anything with it.

I'm sure I could think of others if I tried.

Okay, wish list. They're lotsa things that have bothered me about android, but many of them I've managed to get around by installing new apps, etc. However, I reckon if you have to install a new rom to fix something, that's a failure of the original system. . .

The text entry biz. . . yes, I've tried changing my keyboard, and you're right, it did help a bit. . . I think the issues I'm having are also settings-related. . . I've tried changing speed v accuracy, word prediction on / off, that sort of thing. . . but swype and I just aren't mates. . . Yes, I'm hoping ICS will improve things. . . ergonomically (sorta) I prefer swype to the old-skool predictive text entry, I just find all the errors I make frustrating. . .

ylexot - I never knew! Just tried it, great. . .

I'd recommend using the autosuggest feature instead of autocorrect.

Type the first two or three characters of the word you're trying to type (you can even mess up and accidentally hit the keys next to the ones you're trying to hit) and then a bunch of suggestions will come up. Tap the suggestion you want and then it'll fill in and add a space. Then you can start typing the next word.

Good call. Go into the Swype settings->Word Suggestion->turn auto-correction off. IMHO, auto-correct should be off by default.
Oops! I was talking about the stock Gingerbread keyboard and not Swype, but if Swype works for you, go for it!

Android needs notification previews on the lockscreen. It's been around for a while on jailbroken iphones with apps like Lockinfo and now it's built into the new iOS 5. Why can't Android do this? Executive Assistant is the closest thing but still buggy and doesn't work properly all the time.

My wish:

An ipsec VPN client that works with Group Authentication. I know this issue was closed by Google as being in ICS, but from what I have read they "fixed" it by including/allowing Cisco AnyConnect, which doesn't really address the large number of people out there whose workplaces use Group Authentication.

Hopefully I am wrong and regular old group authentication will work in ICS out of the box.

Hello Americans!

Android is the perfect mobile OS in my opinion, they just need to work out some little things, like integrating some customization options.

For example, it's ridiculous that we have to download some app to keep the screen on while using Google Maps with GPS to see our location (without the navigation)

Also, the wifi sleep time is too long. C'mon, 15 minutes? If I unlock it just to check the time, the wifi will take another 15 minutes to be shut down, thus draning more battery.

There are many apps that serve as work-arounds of that should be already in the OS, imo. Work that out, and there you are.

I'd like to be able to set different sounds for sms, email, and calendar. . . And it'd also be nice not to have to go through a three stage process to turn the phone off -.surely two stages is enough?

Press and hold the power button then select power off. What's the third step?
It's probably confirming that you do, in fact, want to power off. I'm not using a stock rom (I'm using CyanogenMod), but on my phone, I have the option to turn that confirmation dialogue off.

The ability to have 3G without requiring phone service would be nice. Also someone already mentioned streaming radio. Right now it is spotty at best.

Hello people. I went through quite a few suggestions you people made. I realized that most of the features that were not in the android in the past and were suggested here are NOW in it. So I'm hoping my voice gets heard too.

One thing I realized an hour ago about android is that though it allows some apps to be downloaded to the external SD card, its not really the way i (or anyone else) would want it. So the ONE MOST IMPORTANT FEATURE I'll like on the android is that if it uses the SD card for all the installations and downloads by default.
I'll explain:
So i downloaded this game- "NFL Pro HD" by gameloft from the market. It was free. It also had the option of moving it to the external sd card and I have an 8Gb on board so i was like woohoo phone memory saved! But I was wrong. It got moved to the external sd card alright. But that was just 10mb. When i started the game it downloaded an extra 190 mb. Now there are two issues here that I have.

First. I have an sd card installed. The game itself is on the sd card. Then why, when it downloaded that 190 mb, it went to my phone memory? I mean this doesnt make sense. Why would the developers even bother to allow an app to be moved to the sd card when its going to download hundreds of MB later and dump it into my phone memory? I felt cheated. I mean, why would the developers first create such an amazing OS, and then leave out something like this out of their logic?

secondly: Now I dont know who to blame for this. but the game downloaded 190mb. But when the download finally finished and I checked my memory, that particular game had 800mb on my phone storage some how! i went to My Files>Android>data> and I long pressed 'com.gameloft.android.ANMP.GloftNFHM' and then a menu popped up and I tapped on 'details'. I shows 879.8 mb.
This further aggravates my first problem.
And this is the case with most apps. What is quoted, say, 15Mb on the market after installations becomes 25mb or something like that.
I atleast have 4gb internal out of which i can access 1.5gb as my phone memory. I just wonder what would have happened if i had bought a phone with 320mb internal memory.

You might want to upgrade your phone and your version of Android, given that many of your requests have already been implemented:
1. Two-finger resizing came in with Froyo.
2. Google Earth was on my Froyo Droid and is on my ICS Galaxy Nexus.
3. Tethering support is available with ICS, perhaps with earlier versions.
4. Screen sensing the phone orientation has been in Android since whatever came before Froyo.
When I read this email this morning, I came to the forum to see whether for some reason I was reading two-year old mail.

Thanks for the HIJACK.

Instead of discussing crazy apps that would be cool, I think there is still a lot of basic feature improvement that can be done to Android (which might include integrating some current apps in the OS).
Thought it would be good to have this in one convenient thread for the google developers to be able to take note.
Here's a list to get the ball rolling (not in any particular order of importance)

1. Better Caller ID (This might be T-Mobile's fault, but all the numbers that I used to get ID'd, show up as "unknown").
2. Bluetooth Voice recognition? I couldn't get it to work with my motorola set.
3. Virtual Keyboard - I like the Vista Tablet model, but in this case, you would use your thumb to slide the keyboard out when you need it, kind of like you slide out the Main Menu. Although if that got in the way, maybe you could access it through the menu button.
4. I want the option to auto-mount the sd card when connected via USB put back in menu as a check box.
5. Also, the option to choose the time-interval between data auto-syncs.
6. Better battery management functions, profiles, and quicker access to screen brightness, and the other functions that Toggle provides.
7. Make the alarm clock more like Klaxon (minus all the crashing). Big snooze button, back button = dismiss, ability to select any audio in system or sd card, ability to change snooze length (in 1 minutes intervals).
8. Option to remove unnecessary apps, like Amazon MP3.
9. Ability to setup multiple gmail accounts (with one set to master account)
10. Improve email app, allow for multiple message delete, empty trash, search mail
11. Add in-browser Flash support
12. Add OpenOffice-like app to not only read, but create new docs and save to sd card.
13. Add PDF support.
14. Add a file manager. I like Bender, but I think with the support of Google devs, we can make an even better one that integrates a little more seemlessly.
15. Google Earth!!!!!!! I was shocked to see my brother pull up Earth on his ITOUCH!!!! and ashamed that my Google, yeah that's right GOOGLE, phone could not do the same:(
16. Speaking of iPhones, the two-fingered zoom in/out is just awesome. Not sure if that is software or hardware, but it's just a huge difference is usability. And you won't hear me praise many things about the iPhone.
17. VPN functionality.
18. Fix Auto-connect WiFi. I almost always have to go in and manually connect, says connection problem, but then connects manually just fine.

[edit: thought of some more...]
19. I have a lot of Google Map connectivity issues, while being able to use other network apps fine, could be google server issue. Don't think it is T-Mobile (I'm in LA)
20. Sync contacts with popular desktop apps, such as Evolution, Outlook, Thunderbird, etc...
21. I am not big on IM, but I've heard a lot of frustration in this area, maybe someone else can give input here.
22. I'm going to steal from another thread, even though this is hardware related. I think we need a VGA video camera in the front for video-conferencing. Can you please release this OTA?:D
23. Tethering phone to laptop.
24. What do you call it when the screen senses the orientation of the phone, well I want that.
25. How could I forget? ability to copy and paste text from non-text edit modes. Maybe special text selection mode?
[/edit]

OK, whew, that's all I got.

But to finish, I never expected the G1 to be perfect, it's 1st gen, so as Beta testers, hopefully Google/HTC/Tmobile are listening to us to improve not only our phones but the next gen as well.
