I can confirm this. I went from iPhone to Captivate and was able to keep my unlimited data plan. I think they just rename the plan but I know it's still unlimited.

You do have to be careful when you upgrade at third party (not at&t). I've heard people lose the unlimited data and have to fight to get it back.

I'm in the same boat as you. I also have an iPhone 3GS and am eligible for a full iPhone upgrade on 2/20 too. That brings up another question, because we're eligible for a "full iPhone upgrade", does that mean we may not get the fully subsidized price on a non-iPhone upgrade? So, if the Atrix costs $150 w/2 yr contract, do you think we'll be able to get it at that price come 2/20 (assuming the Atrix is out by then)?

I'm really looking forward to switching to Android, btw (especially the Atrix). Tired of boring iOS.
 
For people asking about their upgrade eligibility, just dial *639# and hit the "send" key and you will be sent a text telling you when you can get your "full" upgrade. I really liked the speed of this device with the little time I was able to use it. The LCD was sharp (though a little "washed out") and the phone fits really well in the hand for a 4" screen.
 
Cool, thanks for the reply. I was reading another thread and I thought someone had said we will have to get a new sim card but just wanted to be sure.

You work at AT&T, right? Can you answer a few questions I had in another thread?

First, I'm still on contract, but I have lines on my family plan that are not (all dumb phones). So if I use extend one of their contracts to get myself the phone, will I have to add a data plan to the line that was extended? And if so, can I remove it right away without penalty?

Second, when upgrading, will I need to bring in the phone/SIM card belonging to the line I'm extending? Seeing as how the line I'm planning to extend hasn't been upgraded in several years, I'm not sure if it even has a 3G SIM. So it would likely need to be replaced anyway.

Third, can all this be done without hassle at Radio Shack of Best Buy, or am I better off going to AT&T?
 
I was told I would have to get a different sim too, but Marc says we are good to go. Getting excited.

If the lines that you are upgrading are originally dumb phones, then no, you do not need to add a data plan to it. Just make sure the employee changes the phone back to what ever it was and have them remove the data plan.

if they were smart phones and did not have data plans before (smart phones bought before 9/1/2009) then you would have to call customer service and have it removed.

You do not need to bring the phone/sim of the line you are extending, just tell them when upgrading that line, do not change the sim card.

If the person at radio shack/best buy has done his trainings and knows what he/she is doing, then you will be fine. You can always go to RS/BB, upgrade, and then go to an AT&T store or call customer service (1-800-331-0500 from a land line or 611 from the cell) to make sure all is dandy.

Once a SIM card has been activated once before, It can no longer be activated again. So if a SIM gets deactivated, you will need to get a new one from any AT&T retailer including AT&T corporate stores, best buy, radio shack, and others

im guessing its a security issue if anything.

and remember: Sim cards should cost nothing, they should not charge you for one.

Oh, didn't know that. So my sister gave me an AT&T BB (unlock) since I lost my N1. I saved the sim card in the BB thinking that when I go to the US, I can just do a prepaid with the SIM. So basically I can't do this and the SIM is useless? If so, I'll just throw it away :/

Unfortunately that sim is pretty much useless unless there are contacts you want inside of it.

When you come to the states and sign up for a prepaid plan, you can use your black berry and get a free sim with a new number on it.

I upgraded to an android phone-in HTC aria- using some type of one time early upgrade option, only on select phones. I was already about a few months into a new two year. Using the upgrade options. They also signed me into another two year (att). About 2 months ago. That's the back story.

Now. I want the infuse 4g. What is the best way of getting this phone without forking over the hundreds and hundreds it will cost?

Cancel my line pay the 320. And buy the subsidized price?

Open another line and buy it at a subsidized price?

What is the best option. Or what's more worth it. Or what is available to me that I don't know about?
 
The infuse 4g is set to launch in the summer time so that might play as an advantage. They might let you do another exception upgrade if you give them a good story..."my phone got stolen" etc.

more times than not they can be pretty accommodating. Thats better than paying the full retail cost.


another way would be to sell your Aria and use the money to buy it at full cost. But who knows what the value of the aria will be in the summer.

if you are already on a family plan, opening a new line would be the most cost effective way to go

Thanks for the clarification. Was checking the AT&T Pay as you go and DAMN it's cheap!!! $2/day for unlimited call/text/IM nationawide and only pay for the days you use:eek: Great plan for travelers. What's the AT&T SIM card activation fee?

this is no activation fee :)

you just have to pay for the minutes which are in $15, 25, 60, 100 increments

I know we have talked a few times over today, but I am still investigating my options as far as upgrading. I went to the wireless.att.com website and followed the procedure for determining my upgrade eligibility. Here is what it says:

"A full discount on a standard handset or iPhone upgrade is not available at this time, but you may qualify on 8/13/2011. We can offer you a discounted iPhone upgrade at a higher price with a 2 year commitment and an $18 upgrade fee. Please visit a participating iPhone sales location for pricing on this offer."

What exactly does this mean? Can I go into the store and get the Inspire for the $449 price or is it even more or less?
 
Is At&t ever going to update any OS on a Android device? They are ranked last in all providers, but it's hard to not be last when your score is 0 :D

that means you can qualify for an exception upgrade (you can read about exception upgrades in mt FAQ in my original post) but in short...no you dont have to pay full price

i know its easy to point the blame at AT&T,

but do we know for sure its AT&T?

lets see:

backflip - abandoned by motorola - confirmed by the moto rep
HTC Aria - was shadow of a phone - probably not popular enough to update lol
Samsung captivate - Samsung is still working on its updates - new unofficial rom leaks prove that (plus only 1 of the 4 sgs variants in the US have been updated)
