Help Official Froyo problems and ROM questions

Iome

Newbie
Ever since I upgraded to the official 2.2 with Kies mini, my cappy will randomly freeze, from 5 seconds to as much as 10 minutes. It's frozen during a call before. Sometimes the screen will be completely blank, but if i touch the buttons at the bottom they'll light up. I also get a really bad battery drain; my phone is dead within 8 hours with minimal use. However, if I turn off the data, the battery is just fine. I didn't have these problems with 2.1. I want to root, and maybe flash serendipity, but I want to solve these problems first. I've been trying to read up about about custom ROMs, but a lot of the articles I read are over my head, so here are my newbish question:

Should I restore factory settings, then root, install serendipity, and get 2.2 that way? or should I leave 2.2, root and apply a lagfix, then try to install a custom rom? or is there some simpler route that i'm overlooking? if I put serendipity on my phone, do i need a custom kernel? all this seems so complicated my head wants to explode. I've tried googling stuff like "custom roms for idiots" and "captivate rom help" but i'm not very technologically-minded and I just end up more confused.
