Help OH NO My Atrix wants to update....

First some history... I had a droid x and after it updated. I spent two months trying to figure out how to get it to stop a rebooting. Verizon even sent me two new phones, but they did the same thing even without apps installed.

Now I have an Atrix and everytime I turn around it is asking me if I want to download now or download later. I can not stress enough how much I don't want this phone to be updated. How can I stop this from happening or at the very least preserve the state it is in so I can revert if the update screws up.

I know this is a different carrier and a different phone, but my previous experiences with android have made this a position I really don't want to be in. If I update and have continuing problems again, I will likely destroy this phone with a jack hammer and go back to BlackBerry.

I certainly don't want to go through another reset. I've done far too many of those.

What's wrong with updating? I did the beta test and only problems I've had is 3 random reboots this week made my phone better.

Since your so freaked out about updating maybe get a different phone, there will most likely be another update in April.

He just told you what's wrong with updating (to him). He's had a bad experience. Having a bad experience with things usually makes people gun shy when faced with the same issue.

The first update I did with my IP3g put my phone in recovery mode. I hadn't backed it up in a couple of weeks, so I lost a lot of info from my phone (pics, texts, couple of contacts). So I learned my lesson and made sure to do a backup sync right before any other updates.

Doesn't work quite as simple as that with android though. Not sure how to go about backing up everything to a pc to make sure its all there.

Back up to your internal storage not a pc that way you dont even have to plug ur phone in. Theres an app for that.

I should have been more specific. Needing to reset and losing data are minimal compared to the larger problem of a persistent error which shows up after the update.

Most of my data is in the cloud or on a memory card. Reseting is a pain because of all the numerous apps that need to be reconfigured; similar to reinstalling a computer OS. I haven't used Pandora in three weeks b/c I always launch it while driving with voice commands and do not want to enter username/password on the road. This is beside the point.

A persistent error is something that I can not necessarily fix no matter how much time I invest. It may be a problem with just one app that I've come to rely heavily on. It may be a problem with AT&T. It may be a problem with the software which most people don't mind. It may be a feature which was removed or changed which is now causing me grief.

Some of those aren't as bad as others but there is a huge difference between updating my phone with the latest OS and updating my computer with the latest: I know how to get my computer back to how it was if something doesn't work.

In the case of the phone I feel the sentiment is "tough." I probably spent hundreds of hours before I realized turning off auto-rotate on a Droid X can stop it from rebooting. Not everyone has this problem but I am certain this problem started for me with the update. Didn't have the problem for months and several minutes after the phone rebooted several times back-to-back.

This isn't a problem specific only to phones. The first day that I used my iPad in a business setting was also the day after an update. Apple decided to change the screen lock switch to a mute switch. It was a dismal failure for me— I ended up abandoning the iPad for a clipboard.

I'm not the only one with issues. It is clear in both the Android and Apple markets when looking at comments. "Worked fine until the last update. Please fix!!!"

If it's a game or just some time-wasting app, big deal. Am I just wrong to expect to be able to use these devices reliably in business scenarios? If a computer update happened to knock-out a company's inventory control software I would expect that company's IT department to be working feverishly to revert back to the previous state or reformat their systems and not apply the latest update until the problem could be resolved. No such option on Android. No such option on iOS.

Done complaining for now.

If you have Titanium Backup Pro, you can freeze Updater 2.2.1 to stop the annoying messages asking you to update every hour. I also froze FOTA 2.2.1 so I can be sure it won't update until I am ready.

I guess I have stayed away from that because I imagine a whole new set of problems if something goes wrong during the rooting process.
